Re:Using your personal website to pick up women
hint [for collecting IP addresses]: At the start of each school year send out a mass email to everyone you know with your address, and ask people to reply with theirs so you can update your rolodex. I should be charging (or perhaps getting charged) for this.
Try software patents.Oh, and the fame and fortune they (purportedly) bring... should help you with women, too.
Too bad by the time you get to use your "amazing discoveries" (made the hard way by using the "insights" from TFA -with anonymous<gasp>submission adding to the "mystery"- rather than going the easy route through Geektools or some such), DHCP may have reassigned your "target address" from Sorority House to Astrophysics Lab...;-)

Choice == Fiscal Sense
I recently had a trip to Anaheim and chose my hotel based on whether it had free high speed internet access (looked it up at GeekTels before I reserved my room) since I would be doing alot of downloading of documents for committee meetings that I had that week.
I would also plan trips to a particular airport if it had WIFI rather than nearby ones, especially if I have a layover. To fly to my parents house in Pennsylvania, I could fly into Cleveland, Erie, or Pittsburgh. I normally like Cleveland due to the lower fares, but also like Pittsburgh due to the nice shopping area with non-airport pricing and I like the airport train (which I worked on). -
Re:So which host to use ?
Try using GEEKTOOL's WHOIS query utility:
http://www.geektools.com/cgi-bin/proxy.cgi
It usually does a pretty good job of determining the correct WHOIS server and does it right in this case. (onlinedns.org) -
Re:Keeping .su as an area?
Should India and the UK and the rest of the commonwealth states share a geographical
.BE (british empire) domain? You mean like commonwealth.int?

Re:STSN
In parts of the US, there is the STSN service. They provide a hotel locator on their website.
Wayport also has national (and international) maps of participating hotels
Some other online lists of providers can be found here, here, and here.
Of course, you want to make sure that if you invest in a wireless card it will be compatible with the hotels you most frequently stay at.

GeekTels
From the geektools website, check out the GeekTels section. They have over 2000 listings for the USA.

Re:Report roasts Linux
Nice try. Com.com is owned by ZDNET. zdnet.com.com resolves to the same page as zdnet.com.
No troll, but nice try to label it as such... -
Open mouth... insert foot
Please READ RFCs before becoming an expert. The section you referred to in RFC 1918 is as follows....
3. Private Address Space The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of the IP address space for private internets:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix) -
How the charges will stick
From the article:
"One of the obscene Web sites took information from the Salem Police Benevolent Association site and parodied it by changing words and downloading pictures from the site"
Remember the parody translation engine problems of late where companies sue people for providing jive and Sweedish Chef translations through screen-scraping? This is probably the same. Of course, the police site has no TOS that excludes screenscraping, but it does claim "all right reserved", so using (ahem) 'copyrighted' material is probably the tact they're taking--he's being charged for "misuse of computer system information," not slander or libel.
If he gets a half-assed decent attorny, 1A and fair use of information for purposed of parody should apply, nevertheless, especially since the article implys that he did not download the images from the website, just pointed to them.
It'd be a damn shame if an archive or wget extract of the offending sites got out to the general public. ;) Anyone in salem wanna dig around? The only Hemmah's WHOIS turns up aren't in salem (on'e in fargo...) -
Re:Whois proxies are your friend..
Specifically:
Geektools (a "public domain" project from CenterGate Research Group ) has:
a) a whois proxy which proxies all known tlds, including gTLDs, ccTLDs. It is available as a command line proxy at whois.geektools.com. If you send a blank request, it will display a basic help screen.
b) A web UI at GeekTools WHOIS
c) Under the software link, a generic *nix source tarball if you want to run your own local proxy. GeekTools Software .
d) Also under software, a windows binary that runs out of your system tray.
They all operate in a similar way, except that the ui version will allow you to hotlink to elements of the answer (contact, nameservers, etc).
Importantly, they know about .com .net. org. edu. .mil .gov and about 95 Country Codes automagically. It also knows about ip addresses, handles, arin records, radb policies, AS numbers, obfuscated ip addresses (spammers hack) etc.
We try and keep on top of the new whois changes around the world. If anyone can fill holes for us in the list, please email us!
We limit the number of queries per day to 50 from any ip address to thwart spammers. If you have a good legitimate reason for more queries a day, and give us your real contact information, we'll lift the restriction. Just email the address on the site. -

whois -h geektools.com domain
One-stop WHOIS
On a related note, apparently offers such a service that works irrespective of TLD. If it doesn't already work with the current splitting of generic TLD's, it surely will soon.
whois -h geektools.com domain.tld -
Whois proxies are your friend..
I just alias whois="whois -h whois.geektools.com" and let the excellent Geektools whois proxy sort out which registrar. You can fling most any domain name at it, or an IP, and it'll work out the best place to get the data, then go and get it. Excellent stuff.
Alternatively, visit http://www.geektools.com/whois.html to do the same thing. -
Re:Whois servers (slightly off-topic)Geektools offers a whois proxy and web interface that first queries a registry database to determine the registrar whois to query for the domain in question. Note that other registrars don't use NIC handles, or at least, only NSI NIC handles can be found via geektools.
Try it out: http://www.geektools.com/cgi-bin/whois.cgi?query=

Re:Does Internic Whois index other registrars DBs?
Netnames is good for determining availability across the various ccTLDs.
In regards to gTLDs (COM, NET, ORG), Geektools and Domainia.org do the job - they'll first query NSIRegistry and then automatically query the appropriate Whois database. Note that there's aprox a 4 day lag time between the NSIRegistry's real-time and public databases so new registrations won't showup even though they'll registered. To see CORE registrations in near real-time, query the CORE Whois server direct at whois.corenic.net port 43 and enter domain name and press Enter.
An example of an automated lookup for TITS.COM via Domainia.org:
Domain registry query for:tits.com:
Whois Server Version 1.0
Domain Name: TITS.COM
Registrar: CORE INTERNETCOUNCIL OF REGISTRARS
Whois Server: whois.corenic.net
Referral URL: www.corenic.net
Name Server: No nameserver
Updated Date: 08-jul-1999
The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains and Registrars.
