Any small video that did not require sound could be shown using geexbox.

The parent should read linuxbios.org.
A less elegant alternative would be to use one of the seveal multimedia oriented linux distributions. Geexbox is about 4 megs and intended to be included in the media containing the multimeida files.
Granted it takes more than 8 sec to boot but it has 0 cost and can be used on any moderately standard x86 hardware

Windows players...
If you want to see some windows-users' jaws drop, wait until one of them complains he cannot see some movie or the subtitles and show them one of the jukebox-on-a-CD linux distributions based on mplayer.
They boot, they play. No installing, no fuzz.
- The nice and minimal one: TheGeexBox
- The big and powerful one: MoviX
- And a branch of the latter: WOMP
They can play anything mplayer 9x Can.
