Re:Inevitable but maybe a good thing
All of what you say is entirely reasonable (with the possible exception of $ony), but it discounts the context; Hotz said, when taking donations: "...this case isn't about me. Clearly I am not being sued because of something I have that Sony wants, I am being sued in order to send a message that Sony is not to be messed with. But if I(and all codefendants likewise) actually win this, we have the power to send a much stronger message back. That consumers have rights, and we aren't afraid to stand up for them." and "My attempts at humor aside, I do take this whole matter very seriously. Again, it's not about me, I was on the verge of quitting this stuff last June, and I would hate to be the one who sets a reputation for hackers that all a company has to do is sue us and we back down. In fact, I want the opposite reputation set, that the more a company tries to abuse the legal system, the harder we rally back.".
He talked big, he took money, and then he shied away when he realised that Sony could quite possibly crush him. I think it's disgusting that they can do so, and I think it's quite understandable that he didn't want to take the risk, but the fact remains that he was fairly misleading in what he said. It wasn't "please help me survive until I can make Sony leave me alone" it was "fuck them, I'm fighting back, I'll make them pay, and I want you to help". I don't really blame him for backing down, but I do think those who donated have a reasonable right to feel aggrieved, and some level of apology and explanation from Hotz would probably be appropriate.

I can sort of understand why he settled...
I can sort of understand why he settled: Hell, I'd settle if I realised it would likely take years of my life, if not thousands of dollars to fight.
But still, the rant, as seen on Geohot's site, still gives me a bit of a feeling of dealing with a hypocrite.
Then again, I'm a big hypocrite for wanting someone else to pursue something, which I would probably also settle as soon as possible. -
Re:I'd love to donate, just not via Paypal
What if I want to donate more than I feel comfortable sending through PayPal?
I'm excited! Email me, we'll figure it out.

Re:$20 for the fighting spirit
Your misunderstanding what Geohot is fighting about. If you read http://geohot.com/ [geohot.com] he is not about pirating games.
Of course it's not about pirating games.
But I do want people to be able to use their own hardware for whatever they want.

Re:$20 for the fighting spirit
Your misunderstanding what Geohot is fighting about. If you read http://geohot.com/ he is not about pirating games. He is about using his own hardware however he wants to. If you want to support Geohot's ideals, don't supports some teens piracy, throw Linux on the PS3 and teach the teen how to make his own web/file server using the PS3.

Re:English, motherfucker! Do you speak it?!The whole summary is one giant clusterfuck. Try this on for size:
George Hotz (GeoHot), famous for his iPhone hacking achievements, is planning on fighting Sony over their violating his rights to use--however he sees fit--hardware he's paid for. Ever since sharing his iPhone hacks, Hotz has always claimed being against piracy and says he's never pirated any game, or even signed any PlayStation Network agreements. He's asking for donations to fight Sony and try to achieve something similar to what was previously accomplished by the EFF in regard to cellphones.
And I threw in the most relevant link of them all, viz., the link to fucking donate.

Don't blame the other middle men. Geohot gives credit where credit is due.Geohot did NOT credit those responsible until fail0verflow complained. Parent is obviously geohot masquerading as AC, mod parent down.

Don't blame the other middle men. Geohot gives credit where credit is due. That's hysterically funny given the fact that marcan has pointed out in the comments on this very article that geohot added the credit AFTER fail0verflow wondered why they weren't mentioned at all. Geohot does not give any credit where all credit is due. Geohot is an asshole who rides on other peoples' coattails and can't really actually do anything for himself, just connect the dots so helpfully laid down by fail0verflow, then go beating his chest to the media that HE was the brilliant one behind all of it. Fuck Geohot with a red hot poker.
