Re:71 Percent of U.S. See Humans On Mars By 2033
"More like "71% of humans wish some other humans could be sent on Mars by 2033." I'm proposing a certain brand of fundies to have the honor of the first shipment. You know, to bring the Word to the savage planet or something. Or maybe the Access."
So when you check into your room on Mars check the nightstand and you will find a Bible open up the front and you will see a stamp "This Bible Placed at the Mars Hilton by The Gideons"

Re:yet more biblical contradictions
So I have hackers to blame. Wonderful. If only Methuselah had hidden away his trainer maybe we could all hack and the admins wouldn't mind.
Off topic, apologies in advance to Gideon.
If Gideon posted it you know it to be true.

Re:J&J might not want to push thisWe disagree on at least two levels.
- I don't believe that the availability of readily available first aid supplies to middle and upper class persons in industrialized countries is the primary goal of the Red Cross.
- I think it's perfectly OK for an organization to charge those who can afford to pay enough money to both cover the item and subsidize the donation of that item to someone less fortunate.
I think you're looking at it too simplistically; the Red Cross's goal is not to give first aid kits, or any medical supplies for that matter, to just anyone. I think it is their goal to give those supplies to people who would not otherwise have them.
Put another way, if it's OK for me to buy a first aid kit rather than wait for the Red Cross to give me one for free, why isn't it OK for me to pay the Red Cross twice the regular price so they can give one to someone less fortunate?
Fake PS - I thought you might find this interesting. I got it from the FAQ list on the Gideon's website:While Scriptures with the Gideon emblem are not available for purchase, we do have the following Scriptures available for purchase which we refer to as "plain" (the Gideon emblem is not on the cover):
Those damned Gideons! (pun intended)- Plain full Bible (brown only, King James Version only) for $8.75 each.
- Plain large, soft cover New Testament with Psalms in medium bold print (dark blue only, King James Version only) for $4.00 each.
- Plain pocket-sized New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs (brown only, King James Version or New King James Version) for $2.50 each.

Re:I think its Genetical actually..Yes, there is certainly a genetic component. We have moral instincts (I use the word loosely), we also have instincts and inherited behaviour that is immoral (like anger).
The article is based on a false dichotomy. Biology can explain (or partially explain) why we want to behave in a particular way. You need philosophy (possibly going into theology) to explain why you *should*.
You can simplify morality* as much as you want, but ultimately it rests on personal choices to do what is right. That is the starting point. Even religious explanations (for those who believe in them) are less fundamental, as they are only interesting if you have already decided that you want to do what is moral.
I also fail to see what is so surprising about the article. All human mental faculties must have evolved, therefore it is natural to expect to see some trace of them in our nearest relatives. I would expect other signs of moral behaviour in any reasonably intelligent animal - and there are other comments already posted with examples.
*by simplify I mean to cover a lot of things. These range from "do what helps us all survive" (a view expressed in other comments), to the golden rule, to the greatest commandment (actually two of them) of Christianity. -
Re:Contract with the Gideon BibleI think his point was 'why the hell does every hotel room have to have a bible?'... and i agree. It is pointless and a waste of money 99 times out of a 100.. People are competant enough to go buy, checkout or borrow scripture if they so choose. It just seems like a waste...
The hotels don't pay for the bibles, the Gideons do. It's not a waste of their money because that's what they do. It's simple evangelism. Feel free to argue the inefficiencies and wastes of evangelism, but you'll most likely be wasting your time.
And for that matter, why not have the Kuran in there along with the Mormon's additional Testament?
If some LDS or Muslim folks collect some donations and want to put copies of their books in hotels, they're welcome to do the same.

Gideon Bibles
Hotels do not place bibles in the rooms, the Gideons do.
So you'd have to wait for them to visit the place and put some bibles there first.

Re:stealing bibles?
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but those Gideons Bibles found in motels are supposed to stay in the motels, right?
I've wondered that myself. I just looked up their web page but haven't figured out yet if it's okay or encouraged to take them. The FAQ says they don't get enough money from donations to cover everything they want, so I'm still confused. -
Re:Availability != ProfitabilityActually, most of the bibles you see placed in hotels are put there by the Gideons. I have known a few people that were members of this organization.
Although they are evangelists they are not, "rolling in billions of dollars." They are people that work like everyone else. They don't ask for handouts, although they do accept them. I don't know any of them that own gold thrones with velvet seats.
As far as Bible publishing goes, it's the all-time best seller, bar none. It continues to generate top sales, almost seventeen hundred years after being canonized.
