Global Hashing?????
When I read the headline I knew I must have misunderstood as
/.ers never get off the couch. I thought they were talking about the Hash House Harriers. A drinking club with a running problem. -
Social Network? I am a Hash House Harrier -The Hash House Harriers is the world's most eccentric running club. It is a terrific international social network. The Hash (as in corned-beef) is a 70-year old trail running society with a penchant for paper chases through the muddy woods followed by outrageous humor, taunting and the singing of bawdy songs in the infamous post-run beer-drinking "circle" . With ~ 1700 chapters world wide there is probably a chapter near you. Log on to http://www.gthhh.com/ in order to find it. Hint. If you decide to show up it would be best wear your old running shoes. Trust me.
As a hasher I have a lively society wherever I go (And I wind up in places like Armenia and Moldova). Currently, I am in Oslo Norway and running with the Oslo Hash House: http://www.oslohash.com/
My Hash Name is "The Flasher" which is pretty tame by club standards. It was given to me because, being a geek, I bought a digicam seven years ago in Armenia and annoyed everyone by snapping off thousands of pictures. The internet has really made a difference to the growth of the hash. (Google 'Hash House Harriers' and you will see.) But as far as I know there is not one online community. Hashers prefer to interact on a face-to-face basis. Or even on a face-to-somewhere-else basis; that is, if they are lucky.
On On!
As for online communities... I have to confess that
/. meets my needs. I like to learn so I like to read things by people who are smarter and more knowledgeable than I am and (don't laugh) this sometimes happens around here... Sometimes. -
I always thought...the Hash House Harriers was the ultimate resource for geeks who like to jog.

Amusing ses of shredded paper (slightly off-topic)
I did an internship at a US embassy in Africa in the early 1990s. On the weekends some of us would run in the Hash House Harriers cross-country races. The embassy staff donated their shredded documents to mark the trails. You would be running through the woods, and when you came to a fork, there would be a little pile of shredded US government secrets marking the way!
Of course, the embassies don't use your run-of-the-mill $40 Stables shredders. These shredders produced tiny little slivers that would completely disintegrate at the next rain.
I always wondered if the embassy spooks knew the foreign service officers were using the shredded bits that way.

Hashing
I was working in Africa last summer and found that for me the best way to meet people was by joining the local Hash House Harriers. I won't get into too much detail, but it basically bills itself as "a drinking club with a running problem." The runs were typically on farms and in the woods just outside of the city where I was staying and the landscapes were beautiful. Plus, the runnning was good and the beer was insanely cheap.
:-)You didn't really give any details about where you're going, but if it's anywhere internationally, chances are there's a local HHH. It's got a lot to do with the whole ex-patriot community.

Hashing...Apart from the family, I am into hashing. This has little to do with the stuff that one smokes or puts into brownies. It is just a drinking club that runs. It is quite big (about 200,000 members across 150 countries) but tends to live by disorganisation. Technology fits in well because without any centralised management, it tends to keep together via Email and the web.
It fits in well with a travelling livestyle because almost all capital cities have a club and many major cities. It is a great way of meeting locals as well as other expats.

Hashing!!!Go do a Hash Run, the main activity of the Hash House Harriers. They're a self described 'drinking group with a running problem...' and there are local chapters world-wide.
Around here, a hash run is a 4 mile (give-or-take) hounds-and-hare run, that can go through woods, neighborhoods, office parks, fields, etc., usually w/ just enough time to rest if you're not one of the strong running front-runner types. There are usually a couple of beer breaks (with non-beer too, if that's your thing). It's a pretty geeky, very fun crowd. So go find a local chapter and go for a run.
On-on!!
