Re: ... and the hype for Windows 10 begins....
I'm not techie enough to know for sure, but I don't think there was anything worth hacking in most cars built in 1995, although a few top of the line Buicks and Cadillacs had electronic data recording. List of cars with EDR

Re:Note..Which cars have EDR
Here is a link to a handy list of cars that have Electronic Data Recording. For the tech unsavvy who can't figure out how to disable an EDR, it should be possible to use this list when car shopping, at least for the next few years.

Re:But wait
Actually you're incorrect.
You'll be interested to know that Nissans do not have Event Data Recorders.

And of course I can't find the article right now, but I read one about black boxes in cars a few years ago and it had a quote from a Nissan exec explaining how the Airbag Deployment module isn't even integrated with the computer. It's a whole separate module. So were a few others. So not only DON'T they record the information, but they CAN'T right now, due to the way the car's set up. -
A good checklist of cars fitted with blackboxes
If you want to know which cars are currently fitted with "black boxes" there's a reasonably comprehensive looking list on the Harris Technical Services website: http://www.harristechnical.com/cdr.htm. Of course the real question is who is working on a hack to enable us to turn these babies off?

Witnesses
Witnesses credibility has been under debate for years. Witnesses can be influenced by suggestive questioning, their own backgrounds and prejudices, or the amount of sleep they have had on a given day. And how do you quantify or qualify that kind of tampering? Witness testimony has been used for millenia. No evidence is foolproof. The problem is 1. to know what kind of tampering can be done and be aware and wary of it and 2. to get the trust of the public in that type of evidence so it can be admitted, falible or not.

EDR FAQHarris Technical Services have a FAQ that should clarify some of the issues raised here.
Although I suppose their vehicle list is not comprehensive, it's an interesting source of info.

Re:No need to keep everything recorded
sorry. it's just GM cars. since 1996. Harris Tech
and I believe they record: throttle position, brake pedal position, velocity (your speed), were seatbelts in use, acceleration (or deceleration), and possibly in newer cars (esp Mercedes) direction of travel wrt to the way the front wheels are pointing (to determine yaw, or skidding). car tech is cool, except for these crasg data recorders (CDR's). -
LED's inhibit aircrash post-mortems
LED's are terrific. Increased reliability, higher efficiency, lower power consumption, higher peak output, and better heat dissipation.
BUT, one 'negative' side effect of greater LED usage is the NTSB will have less forensic evidence after aircrashes (at least with smaller private planes without a flight data recorder)...
At moment-of-impact, the filament from a lit bulb breaks apart differently from an already-burned out bulb or from an operable-but-not-lit bulb.
Here's an article that describes filament analysis. And two reports, one where LED's prevent filament analysis (search for "filament analysis") and another where analysis showed the status of indicators (search for "filament stretching")
Slightly off-topic, but interesting, I think.
