Origins Mini-Series Airs Tonight
SeaDour writes "The much-anticipated NOVA mini-series Origins begins tonight on PBS (check local listings for time). Hosted by Neil de Grasse Tyson, an astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City, the ambitious show plans to journey all the way to the Big Bang and back again, "blending astrophysics, geology, chemistry, biology and even paleontology to knit together insights about the structure of the universe, the creation of planets and the foundations of life itself." MSNBC has an interesting write-up on the show that's been four years in the making." -
NCSA Releases Beta of Milky Way Galaxy
TellarHK writes: "One of the coolest attractions in New York City, the Hayden Planetarium is working with NCSA to produce a navigable, flexible, and soon to be open sourced representation of the Milky Way Galaxy. Available at this link the Partiview Visualization Software tool is a particle engine using OpenGL to display the galaxy on your Linux or Windows PC. A Mac OS port (presumably for OS X) is also planned. At .5 status, the program already has a very high neat factor and runs acceptably well on last month's hardware." -

Partiview Universe-Simulation Software
An anonymous submitter writes "The August 2002 edition of Sky and Telescope magazine has an article on universe-simulation freeware from the Hayden Planetarium in NYC. Here's the headline to the article: "Master of the Universe: Initially designed to power New York City's premier planetarium, the most detailed universe-simulation software is now available for your PC - for free. By David L. Chandler" I've already spent a few minutes playing with the Milkyway database and found it to be extremely cool."
