Re:A better bottom line
Hey, I never said that MSN didn't suck (because it does), just that MS sees more growth potential there (after watching Yahoo and Google) than it does in Slate.

Re:Always That Way
SCSI is nice when you really do need the speed, but I think they are missing a bet when it comes to capacity.
The cost of buying myself a personal server with 1 TB of a SATA RAID array is extremely less expensive than if I wanted to do that with SCSI. A large part of that is being able to buy decent 250 GB drives to create the RAID and hot spares from. I can actually fit 1TB nicely in a 4U multi-cpu server.
However, while I'm sure the makers want to sell bigger disks with the same speed and reliability as their current SCSI disks, I'm pretty sure it's a lack of technology rather than a lack of trying that's preventing them from doing so.
As the platters get bigger, the problems of speed, access times and reliability all just get worse.

Re:Question
Watch while this OpenBSD discussion somehow turns into a Windows vs. Linux flame war.
I was at least hoping for some intelligent flames from FreeBSD people instead.

Yeah, I just play games on my computer anyway, even if Gettysburg is starting to get a little old.

Re:They had an opportunity to look good
Well, at least now they can hold classes at the library to learn "CD Art". That art form is almost dead with AOL not being so generous anymore.
Couldn't they at least send their stuff on rewritable CDs?

Re:A better bottom line
Microsoft has also recently announced that they are returning some of their cash to stockholders because they don't have any good places to invest it anymore.
My suspicion is that a group at MS has been analyzing their business units for future growth as part of that cash dividend decision and one of the things they came up with was that while Slate doesn't have much growth potential (but is profitable enough to be turned into cash), after dropping it they can do more in other media stuff to help the growth of MSN.

And now with Amazon raising their affiliate commission on used books this quarter, you'll see more of them sold online, too!

Re:True...Need more Funding.
I think it may depend on how "young" you get the transplant done and if the person has had sight in the past. My understanding is that the brain essentially figures out the connections initially anyway, so there is a large margin for error in the wiring as long as the brain hasn't already wired it one way.
There are some decent medical eye books available if you're really interested in the details. -
Re:Electronic Paper
You'd be surprised. I've read about 8000-9000 books and still manage to average one or two a day even with working full-time and posting on slashdot. (Ok, sometimes the posting overlapps with the working full-time...)
I also run several book review websites, so may not be a typical example.
Of course, I tend to read in the bath (showers don't work as well), while eating, while exercising, pretty much anytime my mind doesn't have something else to think about.
That being said, I hate reading books on a computer screen and suspect this device won't be much of an improvement.
