With XP, I'd think they'd worry more about someone wandering over and taking over the plane to fly it elsewhere, than about it crashing.

XP is a lot more stable than older windows (not perfect, of course), especially when you get to pick the hardware it runs on, but does the plane also automatically download and install all the latest security patches?

I'm pretty sure NetBSD has a port that is designed to run on an airplane...

Yeah, of course, the 50' was without the rifle. They did 1.1 miles with the rifle. So that's a little less obvious.

Sitting in an office building in the middle of a city, looking out reflective windows, you can see a LOT of bluetooth cell phones within a mile or less range.

  3. Re:Anti Wi-Fi neighbor!! on Anti-Wi-Fi Wallpaper · · Score: 1

Remember those modems they use to sell (probably still do for faster connections) that would aggregate bandwidth over multiple phone lines so that you could get a couple of 33.6 or 56K dial-up connections and plug them both into this little router to get twice the bandwidth?

Now all I need is a good wireless card aggregator (I think a lot of the newer server computers come with aggregator software already, so It's got to be out there. Anyone got a good link to some?) and head out to the wealthier part of town. Perhaps a rich apartment complex would be best?

Then just park your car and have all the bandwidth you want!

So to summarize in /. fashion:

    1. Get lots of wireless nics.
    2. Setup bandwidth aggregator.
    3. Park near rich apartments or townhouses.
    4. ????

Why don't they just skip all this intermediate stuff and just strap everybody into a big cocoon and feed them their government required daily nutrients through a tube?

That way people will be perfectly safe from all sorts of vices and problems and they can just let the almighty bureaucrats take care of them.

After all, who needs freedom or wants to control their own body?

If someone is violent when on a particular drug and a court orders them to get this sort of medical treatment, I can see the point in that, but sticking everyone with all sorts of chemicals, "just in case" is ridiculous.

  6. Re:Always That Way on Where are the High-Capacity SCSI Drives? · · Score: 1

SCSI is nice when you really do need the speed, but I think they are missing a bet when it comes to capacity.

The cost of buying myself a personal server with 1 TB of a SATA RAID array is extremely less expensive than if I wanted to do that with SCSI. A large part of that is being able to buy decent 250 GB drives to create the RAID and hot spares from. I can actually fit 1TB nicely in a 4U multi-cpu server.

However, while I'm sure the makers want to sell bigger disks with the same speed and reliability as their current SCSI disks, I'm pretty sure it's a lack of technology rather than a lack of trying that's preventing them from doing so.

As the platters get bigger, the problems of speed, access times and reliability all just get worse.

Couldn't they at least send their stuff on rewritable CDs?

Microsoft has also recently announced that they are returning some of their cash to stockholders because they don't have any good places to invest it anymore.

My suspicion is that a group at MS has been analyzing their business units for future growth as part of that cash dividend decision and one of the things they came up with was that while Slate doesn't have much growth potential (but is profitable enough to be turned into cash), after dropping it they can do more in other media stuff to help the growth of MSN.
