Re:I wonder if they include a disclamer...
I didn't know what it was, so Googled for it. It is produced by the "Digital Lifestyles Group", apparently the same who also made the more-or-less famous I-Opener

Requoting yourself... height of lamenessGo to their front page and they quote USA Today quoting them... "The creators of the hip-e claim it's the first PC specifically for teenagers."
Does this somehow make their claim more valid, because USA Today said they said it? It's like a lawyer going into court and showing the jury a newspaper: "The Daily Times says my client said he's innocent. What more proof do you need?"
Ugh.

Re:Specs?
It's not extremely fast, but a 1.5 GHz Pentium M isn't that slow, either. I don't know the exact equivalent here, but I guess depending on the application and of course the overall system it should be as fast as a P4 2 GHz or even 2.5 GHz.
Maybe even faster when the Pentium M system has a 7200RPM desktop hard drive and a desktop-class graphics card, which this hip-e system has. You're correct in saying that a 1.5GHz Pentium M notebook can compete with a desktop 2.4-2.5GHz Pentium 4. But Pentium M notebooks are held back by 4200/5400RPM notebook hard drives and notebook GPUs (sometimes Intel integrated graphics with "shared" memory). This page and this page of an Anandtech review (September 2003) shows two 1.5GHz Pentium M notebooks keeping up with a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 in Winstone 2003 and SYSMark 2002. A 1.6GHz Pentium M notebook was faster than the 2.4GHz Pentium 4 in all but the Pentium 4-optimized Internet Content Creation SYSMark 2002 (Photoshop 6, Premiere 6, Dreamweaver 4, Flash 5, Windows Media Encoder 7).
However, this page shows that the Pentium M notebooks had slower hard drives (4200-5400RPM), slower graphics (ATI "Mobility" and Intel integrated), and sometimes less memory (256MB). In comparison, the hip-e has a 7200RPM hard drive, (apparently) a desktop Radeon 9700 graphics controller and 512MB of memory.

Re:Specs?
Presumably, web browsing, word processing, DVD playing, etc. According to the website it has a 9700 non-Pro with only 64 megs... Apparently, that's faster than a 9600xt, so it ought to be okay for gaming. Not sure how well it'd run Doom 3, though... (It's also pricey.)

Re:But wait!
You didn't read hard enough! (I don't blame you) $10 is just the minimum amount needed before you get a MasterCard. Take a look at the cash breakdown - if your friend buys a node you get $50, not $10.
Also the card is a debit MasterCard so no credit card bill involved.
I can understand you're exaggerating to be funny, but this just makes the company look worse than it is. -
Anyone seen the Nodebook? (their notebook)
Here
This actually looks just like a cross between an apple laptop and a tadpole ultrasparc notebook. -
What music?

Re:Keep reading, it gerts worse....
And one can clearly conclude from the diagram that anyone who would buy/use a Hip-e has no more than 2 friends.

Appleizing
When I first read about this thing on MSNBC back in august, there was one line that really stood out to me:
"So Savage decided to 'Apple-ize the PC industry.'"
I'm sorry, but hasn't Apple already done this?
And where did they find teens for tesimonials!?!
"'hip-e is the fastest, most customizable computer on the market. It's perfect for me because I can make it fit my style.' Sean, 16" Testimonials -
not only is it a PC, it's a MLM, too
It's a multi-level marketing scheme, too!
For only $1700, you can get in on the ground floor, and get $10 every time your friends buy one. Plus you get to be called a "squad leader!" -
Could have other uses...
Perhaps it's also a "squad alert"!
Uh, Oh! Buddys Buddy in trouble! Let's Roll! -
Sounds familiar
It was only a few weeks ago I saw a poster of this system in my school lunch room.. First thing I saw was just a ploy -- And it was only confirmed by - The design (it makes it look almost like a toy) - Marketing (highschools) - Marketing II (trying to get kids to beg there parents for this computer for "educational" purposes, they even have a list that kids can give to there mommy's and why they should get it. http://hip-e.com/jsp/hip-e_website_parentpage.pdf People make me sick to my stomach -- If anyone has ever read anything on the psychology behind marketing
.. Actually, Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser would be a pretty cool read on marketing particular. All in all for the computer's components, I'de see the mark up higher than apple would put it... Apple brings up (mostly) there own stuff, this is just a different enclosure with a price tag. -
Keep reading, it gerts worse....
What's worse than a woefully underpowered and overpriced PC bent on granting you a "lifestyle"? Getting your friends on board with you for all the real-life fun and excitement that comes with a MULTI-LEVEL VIRAL MARKETING PYRAMID SCHEME!
Ok, that might be a little harsh, but cash rewards for talking your friends into joining your 'squad'? Stupid -- especially when it's only ten lousy bucks on a system that's worth about $800 and sells for $1700. -
But wait!
There's more to the offer!
Buy your hip-e now and you get to join their hip-e squad! as a squad leader!! If your friends join your hip-e squad and buy a hip-e of their own, you get $10!!!!
Of course, all of the money goes into a convenient MasterCard that you get from hip-e, just in time to teach those teens the value of living your life with a credit card bill!!
Become a squad leader! All your base are belong to hip-e squad leaders! -
