Re:Unusual Pricing
Well, I live in Hong Kong and we have 1Gbps fiber-to-the-home at HK$260 or about US$33...

And how much is the gigE going to cost a month ?
US$26/month if you're in Hong Kong. Hongkies need routers too, you know.

Re:NO gig-e low # ports and pci bus for most of th
Where can you get a gig-e connection at home? Seriously, that's total bullshit. I don't think I've heard of a consumer connection that does over 100mbps let alone 1000mbps.
Total bullshit?
Two examples off the top of my head: Here in Asia there's 1000mbps home broadband in Hong Kong. In Portugal you can also find 1000mbps broadband.
But any connection faster than 100mbps requires gigabit ethernet locally to fully realize it (unless you are running fiber to the desktop). And those are more and more common, at least in Asia and Europe. Maybe you live in Africa or some other broadband backwater, but that doesn't mean everyone does.

Re:You are NOT paying enough to complain, STOP IT
You, sir, are a masochist. You love being ripped off by your ISP so much you scream for more.
You can have an uncapped, unlimited, 24x7 symmetric 100Mbps link in Hong Kong for just $268 HKD per month. Which is just about $35 USD, and pretty much everyone uses BitTorrent here. Go Verizon $130+ USD/month for FIOS and you still won't get anywhere near that. How can you be not paying enough?
Oh, and don't bother to pull the population density argument on me. There are metropolitan areas in your country that are denser and richer than the place I'm sitting at. -

Re:Fairly straight forward to me..
How about if you can get an Ethernet line to your flat for 100Mbps upload and download at $35/month?

Re:so what?
Ethernet is a local network protocol, and doesn't have much to do with the way you communicate across the internet. This will help anyone running more than one machine in a particular location.
This you say, but look at networks in Hong Kong & many European cities. Or Wellington, NZ, where I live and work. Metro Area Ethernet which connect hundreds of buildings - including residential blocks.
The future of delivery to Multi-tenant buildings (apartment & office blocks) is all about Ethernet. Anything built recently will have at least a CAT5 from the telco demarc point to each unit - and most blocks in the past ten years will have CAT3. Why spend the money on DSL and get an inferior product when you can drop a cheap switch in the Comms room of a building and give everyone an Ethernet VLAN? -
Hong Kong: 1000Mbps ~ $215/month
We have 1000Mbps plans (Chinese) here already What's the big deal about Finland getting 100Mbps?
-
100Mbps?
I don't know the rest of the world, but Hong Kong has 1G bps home broadband , now, by using IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet, over Fiber directly to home users.
Don't wait for 100Mbps, 1000Mbps is there already. :) -
Re:Why is this so cheap?
Sorry for replying to my own post, found an English link. The same 20mbits overseas bandwidth cap is imposed on the currently available 100mbit service too.

HKBN BB100
They are also offering BB100, a 100Mbps service, that is similar to the price of regular ADSL in Hong Kong.
