Re:Books will stay on paper
I'm counting on books staying on paper for quite some time. I'm just under a year into ownership of an ailing, but full of potential used bookstore.
I find that thet vast majority of fiction readers in my store resist any change from the basic mass market paperback format. Most will read a borrowed hardcover of a favorite author before the paperback comes out, but they'll buy a paperback as a reading copy later.
The key to this, I think, is portability. Paperbacks are easily purchased, inexpensive, and can be carried in a spare pocket nearly anytime. Late last year, I would joke about my huge inventory of portable information storage and retrieval devices, all of which were guaranteed y2k compliant.
People WANT portable, inexpensive and portable. They want the web in their home to be as accessible as a portable telephone, instead of a PC. Until the fiction market can beat the distribution medium of paperback books, I'll still be making money off paper.
This makes me happy.

Re:Interesting...
This bozo came into my bookstore one day, trying to sell me on some sort of scheme. He found out I was a computer guy, and thought I might be interested in this Internet business opportunity.
He handed me a CD shaped like a rounded business card. I popped it into the center groove of my tray drive CD-Rom and it fired right up with this annoying clipart-animation demo that I put up with as long as I could.
Basically, the only good thing I found in the whole situation was the CD thingy.
Here's a link.
<a href="http://www.bizcard-cd.com">www.bizcard-cd.co m</a>
Anyway, I kept telling him I wasn't interested in the scheme. I couldn't convince him that my idea for a web business had NOTHING to do with anything he was doing, but he eventually went away and I'm almost ready to launch :)

Mirrors part 1Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Jan 19, 12:13am EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceWe apologize for the length of time between updates. This list has gotten quite large and thus more difficult to maintain.
Much thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceWe apologize for the length of time between updates. This list has gotten quite large and thus more difficult to maintain.
Much thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Mirrors part 1Note: This mirror list has been copied from http://www.humpin.org/decss/, on January 2nd 2000 13:13 GMT
Mirrors since 28-Dec-99 added by me.
To my main DVD page (containing list of lists of mirrors) Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Fri, Dec 31, 8:18pm EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Rock and Roll will never die!
It is my feeling, being a rocker, that the thrill of performing for a live audience will continue to be a factor in making music. I'm all for the musicians taking control of their own sales and marketing, middle men be damned!
I freely post my music at mp3.com, get very excited that folks in France seem to like it a lot (at least they email more than other folks) and I can feel the seething hate for record companies growing from all sides. MTV sucks, it has sucked since Remote Control. :-) It's a watering hole for drunk frat kids who consume mass quantities of Top 40 garbage.
Fret not over the death of Rock. Music, like knowledge, wants to be free! :-)

OOPS - Trying Humpin list againYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!

I live prepared for Y2k
I run a used bookstore and have approximately 30,000 Y2k compatible information storage and retrieval devices in stock.
If the apocolypse comes, I expect books to be the next TV, and I'll be a millionaire.
Of course, I'm obliged to point out, as a purveyor of information, that neither the century, nor the millenium, are due to end until the END of 2000. 11 eggs do not make a dozen, and there was no year zero. Just because everybody on TV is an idiot, doesn't mean you have to be.

MirrorsYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Dec 29, 3:14pm EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Linux, GEM and NewDeal
I'm working with at-risk kids in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We're running free basic computer courses, using donated 386 and 486 computers (that's all we can afford).
Of course, the problem is that Linux + a usable GUI can't run on that sort of hardware configuration. I don't have the money - or the desire - to buy Windows-whatever for these machines, or to pirate it (piracy here can - at least in theory - give 6 months to 2 years prison).
Anyway, the solution I found last year to this problem was to develop some software in Visual BASIC for DOS which incorporates the basics about a certain common User Interface (complete with Start button and desktop icons). It's worked - we're finishing the first batch of courses and will have around 20 kids graduating with a working knowledge of PC operation.
It is interesting to note that the UN is reported to be working with the Brazilian government to translate NewDeal (a commercial product) for use in situations such as ours, ie educational use on low-spec machines within Brazil. That sounds like a dumb move to me, as that will effectively lock NGOs and schools into commercial software, a lá Nestlé and Microsoft.
Maybe a better alternate would be to put some serious development work into GEM, now that it has been GPLed. I've been using it here on an experimental basis and believe it has potential to be useful in this situation (for more details see http://freegem.homepage.com).

Foundation Imaging
Foundation Imaging is probibly the best visual effects house. They did the first three seasons of Babylon5 and are now currently doing what's been called the largest effort ever in computer generated imagery.......ROUGHNECKS: THE STARSHIP TROOPER CHRONICLES!
While Pixar and Industrial Light and Magic may get all the press, Foundation is definitly light years ahead of them. Just watch Roughnecks, and you'll see why they're the unsung heros of CG.

Its accurate
As someone who was down at the South Pole base and McMurdo, I have to say that this book is really very good in its description of culture and environment down there. I was really surprised at just how well it represented these aspects.
If you'd like to see what it is like at the southpole at the moment, follow the AASTO cam link from my homepage http://danielmarlay.homepage.com

See we as humans need to learn a little thing...
knows as self control
If we do not like what we see, don't look. Change your view. Look at something that interests you.
We do not need anyone/anything telling us what to buy/look at/read/learn/listen to/see. I mean if the american govt all of a sudden decided you all had to use netnanny on your computers, or your isps where forced to use werb site blockers, you jon kats would be nearly the first one to say, "hold on a second, thats not what I meant."
Big sister, big brother, orwell would be rolling in his grave.
I know, I know, but you can turn it off. But who will turn it on? Certainly not the mentally defecient, who buy into the entire Monica Scandal, or the new palm XX.
So what do we do about this problem?
The answer is nothing. We let the daarwinian theory take hold. We need to think, and if you don't you will die off!
An ajoining note: I just had one of the defecient thinkers in here. She was telling me that she wom something from sympatico.ca. she put her name and email address down and won a hat. She had no idea what she was putting her name down for.
The same woman told me that she bought a scanner for $40 US. She doesn't even know what it does, or if it will run on her 386 running win95.
"I saved about 70%" she gleefully sputted out.
Damn people are born stupid, and never grow out of it!!!
More about my ideas. -
Re:'Professional' journalism and /.Well, I'm a professional writer. I say writer rather than journalist, precisely because the latter word means all too often the wretches who so distorted the Columbine events. I think it is unfortunate that you tar anyone who makes a living from writing (that's what "professional" means in this context, right?) with the same brush as Katz. I for one don't have a media agenda, and would like to think that my posts to slashdot are evaluated just as anyone's should be: on what they are actually saying, and I guess on the my
/. track record, for stuff that's difficult to verify. I post to slashdot when I think I have something to say; I suggest a feature to Rob when it's a piece I probably couldn't sell, but want to write anyway. Seems to me that anyone who is good enough to make a living from writing doesn't *need* to do much self-promotion, in any case. Get the stuff published: people will read it, and if it's good, word gets around. Of course, if a "writer" hasn't got anything to say in the first place.... well, that's what editors are for. After all, there are alternatives for a failed writer-wannabe. I hear career progression at Mcdonald's is rapid -- plus all the fries you can eat!If I ever got around to writing about Columbine (trying hard to get back on topic), I would start my research with this site, which rather oddly in this whole affair, is a place which does honestly try to stick to the facts about those two individuals who were at the centre of all this.

You can putr anything on a T-shirt if you look hard enough, zero23.com has the best variation of T-shirt, baseball shirt and ringer. I don't know if it offers message printing though, but I defintely sure other do message printing for you besides pictue printing. but those sites offer only (lame) white T-shirt.
l o o k a t what I have them print on my upcoming t-shirts. The reason I spread the good word for zero23 is that they really have some taste on designs.

Merry Meet indeed!
It's soooo nice to see fellow earth children pop their heads up like prairie dogs whenever we are misrepresented.
You all beat me to it. :-)
Yes, it's a new moon, so where will I be? At band practice with our new guitarist and new percussion guy! New beginnings, wee!
Y2K riots will be fun to watch while astrally projecting myself over New York City. LOL

This is OT but... of course you are right.IE5 render my homepage's javascript at least 3 times faster than N4.6. I won't use IE though. However, what you are saying has nothing to do with the discussion. They are talking about dymanically generating the webpage, which should be more important when javascript, xml are standardized.
