Of course, don't search just slashdot for articles like this. Also search the archives of papers that have been presented at various USENIX/SAGE conferences (in particular, LISA), and other USENIX publications, starting at http://www.usenix.org/publicat ions/publications.html.

You will also want to use index sites such as Yahoo! and Excite, as well as search engines like Google, Altavista, and Hotbot, not to mention community directory projects such as dmoz Open Directory.

That's just a sampling of the sorts of research that you should START with. Of course, to do this right, you'll need to do much, much more.

I wonder how many sites with the title "Cookie Recipies" actually contain nasty hardcore porn.

In my experience, deceiving site titles are actually less problematic than they used to be.

A year or two ago it seemed like no matter what query I entered into Alta Vista, one or more pages with innocent titles would pop up which, when selected, would display a message to the effect of "Site moved, redirecting..." or "Site moved, click here", the 'moved' site being porn. Blecchh. Typically a server would have simply hundreds of these bogus-forward pages.

I haven't seen one like that in a while. I suppose upstream providers started putting the smack down on deceptive sites, or perhaps Alta Vista started filtering those sorts of pages out. If the latter, that's a sort of filtering that, while I don't support, I also don't mind, since there are oodles and oodles and oodles and oodles of other search engines out there and you aren't limited to using one search engine like you're limited to using the connection you've got.

Inktomi sells their technology to other companies; they don't operate a search engine under their own name. HotBot is Inktomi-based; there are others as well but I don't know who.

I beleive the Inktomi software and database of links is the guts behind a couple of the search engines out there. If my memory serves me correctly their technology powers www.hotbot.com

Inktomi, last I looked, don't run a search engine site; they develop the tech and license it to others who get involved in the messy business of making a popular search engine site.

IIRC, their highest profile customers are Hotbot, who used Inktomi from the start, and Yahoo!, who switched from Alta Vista to Inktomi. Inktomi is a more neutral backend for Yahoo!, who are competing in the same market as Alta Vista.

I think you've mentioned the key here. The solution is the use of specialised search engines. I find music with http://search.mp3.de, I find hacks with http://astalavista.box.sk, etc.

I look for most of my information with HotBot just because its advanced search option lets me really weed out the bad hits.

Solution: HotBot. Sure, it's a link farm, but if you look carefully, you'll find a link to the text-only page (http://www.hotbot.com/text/). Save the file to your hard drive, change a few things, add a button on your Personal Toolbar (if you're using Netscape or IE) and... voila, very fast searching.

Yes, HotBot is running on NT, blah blah blah... but it is the best search engine I have ever seen. Click on the Advanced button ("More Search Options"), and you're presented with a lot of different options, like searching for a file with a certain date, in a certain language, and even by domain. The engine supports just about every piece of syntax you can think of.

Even the link farm isn't too bad. They seem to have some kind of agreement with the Open Directory, as that is where the directory links come from.

Of course, they still use redirection links when you click on the search results...

Ok gang. We went through a similar thingie a 'few' years back when most of you were not even a twinkle in your daddy's eyes yet.

It was the 'real programmers' versus pinko compilers. (Search your favorite search engine for real programmers don't eat quiche to catch up on your hacking history.) 'Real programmers' only used assembler language and did not trust compilers. They did not believe. They are, of course, mostly extict now. Nothing, except for some drivers and low level code, gets implemented in assy any more.

What do we do these days? We do not even look at the compiler-genrated assembly code any more.

What's next you ask? Complete model-driven, implementation independent code generation, of course!

How? What? When? Where?

How about being able to generate C++, Java, C?

Poor performance? No problem! Just swap the software architecture. Single process/single processor -> multi process/single processor -> multiprocessor/fully distributed. Whatever does the job...

Why commit to platforms? Switch from CORBA -> DCOM, Sybase -> Oracle, C++ -> Java and so on.. (and back again). If XOOF++ comes along, all you have to do is modify the affected part the software architecture and generate the new code. No changes to source models required to generate a code based on a different implementation!

Oh - did I mention that the resulting code is practically bug free? It does what you want, as fast as you want. No memory leaks, core dumps, etc.

It would behoove the open source community not to get stuck in the implementation layer and not become the 'real programmers' of the future. Once these models really catch on, it will be great to have a set of open source tools and models ready for the ultimate blow to proprietary code.

The main problem with search engines, is the results are usually polluted with porn, warez and other such stuff, by people with loads of METAs or whatever the search engine looks for. What we need is a search engine that starts (from either a directory, or a classic search engine), and re-ranks the results according to how useful people found the site they clicked on.

But, wait a minute, they're here! There are several sites that use a popularity-based reranking system, excite and snap.com being among the most popular. Of course, the other engines are following in their footsteps - it appears that direct hit (who power hotbot and several others are using the same sort of thing.

It'd be even better if it could group users into profiles according to their (user-selected) demographic (eg: doctors, british). That way, if an American types "football" they get links about American Football (gridiron?), if a Brit types "football" they get links about soccer, and if an Australisian types it they get links about rugby.

Search Engine Watch has an article about such a system, by the same people who provide the technology behind snap.com (disclaimer: okay, I work at globalbrain, but I'm talking generally).

I bought a module for my matrox G200 a while back that does tv-out. It has a setting in the bios which sends a signal to the tv and to the monitor as well. It seems to find a mode that works for both TV and computer.
Anyway, this output works fine for dos, linux CL, and video modes like that. Also it has a windows utility that is able to change the video mode so that windows is output to the tv and the monitor (although again it looks strange on the monitor). This works for 640x480 800x600 and 1024x768. It seems to be just changing video modes and sync frequencies.
When attempting to get the tv-out to work under X (with my normal monitor modeline settings) all that is output to the tv is a white screen. I tried for a while to find modeline settings that would work for NTSC, but I was unsuccessful. However, I still think that it's only a matter of finding the correct modeline settings. All of the NTSC specs that I found on the internet and tried to convert to modeline didn't work though. If matrox was kind enough to give out the settings that they use for windows i think it would work.
At this point I've pretty much given up on this, but if anyone has any suggestions please email me

I once tried to maintain a database-backed website whose glue was in Rexx. Yes, it blew the doors off DOS batch files. Quite a complete little language with some nice features. Unfortunately, I had the same allergic reaction to it that I always have when I try to read FORTRAN. Its design was very much rooted in the IBM mainframe culture, and it gave me the heebie-jeebies. I'm not being fascitious; something about its worldview bothered me in a very visceral way.

I'd be interested to hear what people who've worked in mainframe culture think about Rexx. I'm very much a *nix person, and just don't understand that point of view. How did it feel to use something like that on the desktop? What's your reaction to today's unix (or windows) dominated environment (and people like me)?

My main gripe with slashdot's performance is the rendering speed. Massive tables just are dog slow. Not that I'm all that much better. It does go to show that performance isn't just about cpu cycles. You can make a linux very slow, and you can make NT scream (shudder), it's just easier to get good performance when you're working on something that isn't based on VMS. O'Reilly has a decient book on web performance tuning if you're intersting.

Hello, Slashdotters. I just wanted to stop in and say a big hearty "Thank you" to everyone who has stopped by to visit today, including those who have sent me e-mail and especially those who have sent in suggestions or submitted textfiles for me to add to the site. It really makes me happy to see that people have taken the same interest in this period of history that I have, and that they're proud they were a part of it too.

I also wanted to answer a few of the subjects that came up on this Slashdot topic, just so everyone sees my answers.

First of all, not all of the textfiles are up yet. In fact, while there are 9,000 textfiles up, I have something in the range of 20,000-40,000 waiting to be sorted through! I just wanted to choose a good "break" in my work to invite the world to come see, so that I wasn't toiling in silence and darkness without sharing what I've found so far. So, expect that the site will grow even more in the months to come. A few people expressed unhappiness that I didn't have X file or Y file; in fact, I might very well have it, just not put up on the site yet. At worst, if people feel my site needs a certain file, they should send it to me at the above address.

A VERY large group of people have expressed that I should have some sort of search engine on textfiles.com, and while I agree with them, I don't know any way to do that and still have the system move with any sort of speed. If there's a really good indexing program out there, I'd like to see it, but the site is already into the hundreds of megabytes and I'm concerned that there's no easy way to do it. I have a sort of backup plan, however, and I may have the hotbot site do the work for me because you can search by domain. If this is the case, I will utilize it. Otherwise, I don't know if I can help with that.

There were some minor aesthetic differences that people have with some of my choices on the site. Where I can non-intrusively implement the suggestions, I will, but otherwise, I kind of like things as they are. It makes me feel very cozy and nostalgic, and a lot of users have agreed with me.

At some point I might sell CDs for people who want the ease of getting a piece of plastic instead of spending hours downloading files, and I will possibly look into T-shirts if there's an interest. This is mostly because I like T-shirts.

It might interest some people to know I am speaking at DEFCON, the annual technologist/hacker convention held in Las Vegas. I hope some of you decide to make the trip. I'd love to meet you and talk about the old days and the wonder of the new days.

Finally, textfiles.com is running on a Dell 486/33 box running Red Hat and apache, and it handled over 15,000 users today without any major problems. What a wonderful operating system, and what a great web server.
