...you don't live in a vacuum. Whether you believe it or not the corruption of the USPTO affects you. Additionally revoking a patent involves more than your 2 magic words, it largely consists of paying huge sums of money to lawyers. So you can wake up and start caring now, or later when you have to deal with all the lawyers and their hourly fees.

Sales tax is payback to the state you are located in for use of their infrastructure (roads, etc.)

Online stores make customers pay sales tax if they live in the same state. If a store doesn't have a physical pressence in a state then there is no need to pay sales tax, in fact it's UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

So tough if mom and pop shops are having a hard time, they are merely paying for the infrastructure they use and if they don't like it and consumers don't feel it's worth the extra dough then they will have to move online or suffer. Deal.

There's no reason to have the parent post moderated down to zero. It may sound a bit confrontational, but sometimes the truth hurts. Ok, MySQL is a database, but it isn't a relational database and hence has the problems that our AC indicates. PostgreSQL is a lot closer to catching Oracle than MySQL will ever be.

Whenever I hear the someone in the know buying a linux box, it's usually from VA.

However how many have bought from Penguin Computing? What's their reputation like. Just from browsing there web page I got a pretty good impression. There site is clean and loads faster than VA's and they seem to really know what they're doing. In many instances (RAID comes to mind) Penguin seems to be more flexible than VA.

So what's the deal. Anyone have personal experience with Penguin?

This is incorrect period. The 'Brokerage whores' do not get all the money. Rather all the employees, friends, and family who were in on the deal directly benefit from VA going through the roof. That's why stock options are a big deal.

Of course the underwriters of the IPO and all their big wig clients also made a lot of money on the deal. But that's only fair, after all it's technically a risk to underwrite a company and while you may not understand their jobs they do work long hard hours to make this all work.

I have to disagree with the notion that the Internet will not continue to grow. Just look at the campus of any modern university and you will see an abundance of terminals and a populace utterly dependent on them. In addition Palm like devices with Internet capablilities will only hasten this process.

As for patents, remember they only last 20 years. The RSA algorithm for public-key encyption is one that is about to enter the publice domain. And as far as these absurd 'everyone's doing it, but I got the patent' patents, all it will take is a company with enough resources who wants to use the technology without paying royalties. I assure you they will be quick to bring prior art to the court's attention.
