Oreilly written by someone else...
You can find many links related to Struts on Ted Husted's page
... the author of the O'Reilly thereon.
Ted wrote Struts in Action actually.
Chuck Cavaness wrote the Oreilly book. -
Re:What is it ?Struts is a web application development framework (WADF), of which there are many. The proliferation of open source WADF's prompted Anthony Eden to begin his Wafer Project, which aims to compare
the many open source web application frameworks which are available using a common example application. This research project is designed to compare the application frameworks on a level field by specifying an example application so that the application features become irrelevent and the merits of each framework becomes the focus.
Anthony could probably use some help. You can find many links related to Struts on Ted Husted's page, because he's the lead developer for Struts and the author of the O'Reilly thereon.
In the opinion of some of the smarter Java developers, Struts is no longer the best of the WADF's in the Java world. Some of them seem to prefer WebWork, which is now part of OpenSymphony. Debate over Struts is raging.
Check out an attempted improvement to Struts.

Some relevant links
Struts is but one presentation framework. A discussion comparing Struts and other frameworks is informative, and, indeed, there is an entire website devoted to such a comparison. For Struts links, try the home page of Ted Husted, the lead Struts developer.

Re:Reason for the switch.
I don't think "grokk" means what you think it means. Have you even read the book, buddy?
Yeesh. Kids these days. -
Re:JavaFaces?
Struts and Java Server Faces are not "competitive". See the Struts FAQ They do different things. Struts is mostly a controller (with some nifty view components). Java Server Faces is supposed to develop a GUI for creating view components (JSPs).
At least a few major Apache contributors (Craig McClanahan, James Strachan) are involved with Java Server Faces... -
Re:The Other Star Trek References
I much perfer the TASP to the phaser on stun setting.
A device which can be used from close-range to stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain. Tasps are primarily used by practical jokers who "make someone's day" from hiding.

Re:Press Enter
Isn't that title of Haldeman's (was it Haldeman?) story?
John Varley, actually, and it was only 16 years ago. Of course, the seminal work in the net-comes-alive genre is Vernor Vinge's 1980 True Names.

Mr. and Mrs. Everywhere
This sort of thing scares the bejeebers out of me. Not because it's intrinsicly bad, but because it brings us one step closer to the world of John Brunner's "Stand on Zanzibar". How long before we see a real-life Mr. & Mrs. Everywhere? (Sponsored by all the "with it" brand names, of course.)
Now, I don't see a problem with "Mr. & Mrs. Everywhere" per se. But I don't want to live in Brunner's future! And every year I see that more and more of the things he wrote about are coming true...
