Re:That's the bit that gets me, the console makers
Damn it, I want to see some hardcore AO games. I mean, I haven't been into gaming for literally years but give me a hardcore AO with full frontal nudity, sex, oral sex, sodomy, bloody violence, drugs... how about making Fritz the Cat, the only feature length animated film ever to recieve an "X" rating from the MPAA, into a game?
Speaking of Fritz, a few years ago when I was on Paxil, Springfield was full of of cartoons and I met the skinny crow woman from Fritz the Cat (her name's Ginger). Twice!
I lost both levels, never did get laid back then (note the title of the second link).

Re:Simple solution
Feel free to copy your rejection letter to the local media. They love a good story.
The media are corporate. They are not going to print any letter that would receive an "insightful" or "interesting" mod at slashdot (check my comment history). The same people who own your newspaper own Sony and Universal and BP.

(you may find that link amusing... it's a search of the Illinois Times' for my name (the last story listed quotes my daughter). They are an independant weekly here and almost every letter I've written them has been published. The Copely paper, the State Journal Register, has never printed any letter I ever wrote them.
You might also find it amusing that the linked S-JR story is about my roommate's ex-husband, who was on his way to kill his parents when the cops stopped him (yes I have an interesting life. -
Re:Faraday cageYou say that as though it's a bad thing. Tragic, yes, but not the fault of the police officers.
It is a bad thing and it is the fault of the cops. If my EMP device destroys your pacemaker and kills you then yes, it IS my fault.
What other course of action would you propose in such a case as this? Just letting the car escape and perhaps injure or kill other drivers? Pursuing on a high-speed chase through traffic? Shooting the tires?
They have these newfangled thangs called "hee-lee-oCOPters" that (get this) FLY AROUND!
You seem to imply that all police officers are jack-booted thugs just looking for the next innocent person to kill then "get off the hook" on a technicality.
Dude, you must be even whiter than I am. My 4th amendment rights have been violated TWICE this year alone, and my eyes are hazel and my hair is gray. Every black person I know is scared shitless of the cops.
*Most* police officers are brave men and women who put their lives on the line
The most dangerous job isn't police work, it's construction. These brave men and women put their lives on the line to build your house and mall! And the cops aren't protecting your rights; they are enforcing the law. Or are supposed to; as I said, the cops have violated my 4th amendment rights twice this year. Don't tell ME they're "protecting your rights", they don't give two shits about your, my, or anyone's rights.
There was a high speed chase through Springfield last Friday:The incident began about noon, when a Springfield police officer sitting a Fifth and Carpenter streets saw a green Chevrolet Cavalier speeding south on Fifth. The driver, allegedly Britz, slammed on his brakes at the intersection but almost didn't make the red light, police said.
No EMP needed. I'm incredibly glad they caught this guy, as he once spent five years in prison for trying to kill his then-wife, who is now a good friend of mine.
Most cops I've known were, indeed, crooked (but this is Illinois). Nice folks, good hearted, but crooked as hell.
A few links to Illinois news stories:
Springfield's worst nightmare
Police shoot, kill man on West Side
Man dies in police custody
Just last winter there were two incidences of off duty cops beating people in bars. In the first case, this drunken burly cop beat a five foot tall 110 pound bartender for not serving him more alcohol. In another, four off duty cops beat some businessmen in an unprovoked attack. Both instances had both cameras and eyewitnesses or they'd never made the papers. Then there's the elite Chicago unit that was just disbanded, with one of its members charged with murder. The newspaper chronicled setups, bribes, extortion, planted evidence, etc.
Today's cops are to be feared, not respected.

Re:matter of timeYou don't silence rude cell phone people by cutting off the cell phone universe. You don't stop obnoxious car drivers by blockading the interstate.
Rude behavior in your car is almost always illegal. Rude behavior on a cell phone is almost never illegal. Where there is no law, your only recourse is vigiliantism or bending over.
I want a pocket jammer, but what I want my jammer to do is put a 100hz tone right an the asstunnel's ear for about 1/16th of a second.
Phone call at McDonald's? I have no problem with that; the screaming brats are louder and far more obnoxious. In a theater? The damned theater should be built in a faraday cage. Nice restaraunt? That's where I'd want my pocket screamjammer!
Of course, if there were some law against shouting in a public place and the police actually enforced the law, that would be a solution. But the cops here won't even enforce the jaywalking laws (yes, that's a letter from me), they're too busy with drugs.
-mcgrewSo the sky's colors fade as I get to Marleys, and I see the dorky kid bartender from Dempseys, only instead of the backwards hat, he's wearing a white shirt and tie, yelling into a cell phone and gesturing wildly, completely oblivious to his surroundings. "Listen goddamned it you fucking asshole, I'm going to have all your fucking teeth pulled out, you got me? Now get the goddamned shit straight and no more fuckups!

Old old old news!North Carolina and slashdot are SLOW! Well, no surprise about slashdot, of course. From the Illinois Times, July 27, 2006 (a year ago):
Since being profiled by Illinois Times this spring, Dayton Keyes, who spends less than $1 per day on fuel by producing biodiesel from used cooking oil, says he's lost count of the media interviews he's done.
There is much more in the article.
So it was bound to happen: Officials from the Illinois Department of Revenue contacted Keyes last week and politely informed the police investigator for the secretary of state's office that he was violating state law.
"It was a surprise to find out about it, because I'd been told there was no tax on it," Keyes says.
Although Keyes was correct that there's no sales tax on homemade biodiesel, the state does charge all Illinois drivers a motor-fuel tax for "the privilege of operating motor vehicles on public highways and recreational watercraft," according to IDOR's Web site.
"If someone figured out how to burn water in a motor," Keyes quips, "it would be taxed."
In addition, Keyes learned, he must be bonded for at least $1,000 and licensed as a fuel distributor. Then, every month, he must file a special tax return.
What's bad about this is that using cooking oil as motor fuel gives you carbon-neutral driving! This oil comes from soybeans, rapeseed, etc. All the carbon in this fuel came out of the air, not out of the ground.

Re:Police must be responsible for their actions
I live in "vote early, vote often" Illinois where former Governor George Ryan (now a conviced felon in the Comercial Drivers' License for Sale scandal) commuted the death sentences of all death row inmates when it was found that half of them were proven innocent by DNA tests.
You might be interested in three articles published by the Illinois Times: Springfield's worst nightmare - "Cops thought they nailed a drug kingpin. What they got instead was a world of trouble", Payback - "Man who beat cocaine rap sues the city; whistleblower's case survives", and Legal eagles - "City defendants get some muscle in Larry Washington case."
This stemmed from some very crooked cops, who have since been fired from the police force. Note that these cops have not only not been arrested, the city's lawyers are paying for their defense!
And our Mayor was re-elected yesterday.
(Folks who were at K5 a few years ago can easily guess who I am. Yes, it's the same Springfield.) -

Re:If this can't finally nail the coffin lid shut
We need more information like this to come out because when dealing with elections, the last thing we need--but apparently the opposition wants--is for some kind of shennanigans elecing the wrong person.
Aint gonna happen. The corporate media won't let it. The same people who own your legislators also own the media; there's an article about that in today's Illinois Times (a small, leftist, independant weekly). -
Re:Staring
I was here last night. I'll probably be at NitWhit's tonight, since I' haven't heard "Dirty Ernie's". If they suck I may go somewhere else.
What's all this about "frequent Internet use is associated with a decline in local knowledge and interest in living in the local area"?
I don't get it. -
Re:All-You-Can-Eat Shipping?
Only shipping? I'm going to patent all you can eat trucking, and all you can eat airplaning. If I can get the patent for all you can eat walleye, I'll put half the restaraunts in Springfield out of business!

Re:Is this for real?
Who reads "bar reviews?" I've never ever even seen a "bar review." I do look at the Illinois Times to see who's got a band and what bands are playing where, but note that the IT is a dead tree newspaper stuck on the web. Also, I don't see or not see a band based on a review. If I've seen them before and they suck, I don't go back.
And how is an online review any different than reviews in newspapers? Newspapers have been reviewing movies ever since there have been movies, and in a good sized city there used to be several newspapers to choose from. Liberals would read a paper with a more liberal bent, while Conservatives read conservative papers.
How is this any different?
You folks should realize that the internet doesn't change everything. Many more 20th century inventions have, so far, changed the way people live far more. The auto, airplane, refrigeration, electricity... The cell phone has changed how we act far more than the internet has.
All the internet changes is that the library is now in my living room, and it's the biggest library I've ever seen, and I can put books on its shelves if I so choose. As a bibliophile and a hyperlex, I love the internet, but it hasn't changed my life very much. -
Re:Or... not here
We have two newspapers, one "free" (paid for by advertisers) and one that costs fifty cents per copy.
Oddly, the paper that is only supported by ads cover stories that the mainstream "for pay" paper won't touch, and even gets stories from Alternet.
Yes, both local papers go into much more depth than the TV stations. But you are equating paper with "paid" and TV with "free." The fact is, as I have cable, I am NOT getting it for "free." I pay my cable company, who pays the cable networks (CNN, MSNBC, etc).
But oddly, the "free" paper goes much farther in depth than the "paid for" paper.
The two papers I am referring to are Springfield IL's State Journal Register and the "free" Illinois Times.
