Re:Horrible idea..
I've probably had thousands of lithium ion batteries pass through my hands over the years.
When I started playing Ingress, battery packs weren't popular and yet, so we carried spare batteries. To play for hours, we had to swap batteries, or be tethered to a car. They were dropped, manhandled, and otherwise abused. Of everyone I know that did it, none died. No explosions. No fires.
The only real thing we found was, repeated charge/discharge cycles daily did eventually degrade the life of the batteries. A typical work day could be 1hr before work,
.5 hours on smoke breaks and lunch, and a few hours in the evening. That's just Ingress. Actually using the phone as a phone added hours, but didn't suck up the battery life as much.We see the same from ecigs and 18650 batteries. I only made one smoke, and that was by physically cutting the battery open. I wanted to see what was inside.
:)The only battery that I've had swell to the point of almost bursting was a Macbook Pro's battery. I stopped using it months before, and only noticed when the battery cover popped off by itself.

Re:Took my son around to play it
I'm guessing the policy of automatically accepting places of worship as ingress hot spots is really backfiring here
Here's a link so you can get some idea of what would get accepted.

Re:Never moderate anything and ignore cheaters?
This one is literally a pile of rocks, is on private residential property, and portal borders a hunting club (yes, you can be accidentally shot at for accessing this portal). It's also home to protected rattlesnake dens.
I've seen other portals being rejected on appeal for being "unsafe", because they were located on a somewhat busy road. Call me crazy but I think poisonous snakes and being shot at would be much more dangerous. Way to be consistent, Niantic.

Edges of the Bell Curve
I wonder how this research would have shifted if they'd only sampled geo-cachers and Ingress "agents"

Try a game!
Ingress makes you move around, I lost quite a bit of weight since I started playing ( http://www.ingress.com/ )

They already have it
is called Ingress.
Unless they meant killer in another context, an augumented reality FPS should work too.

Re:and they have replaceable batterys and extended
I've been fine with my phones for years. Recently I've been playing Ingress on my HTC EVO Design 4g. That can suck up a battery pretty quick. Even on a 2.1A charger it doesn't keep up all that well. After an hour or two, it starts complaining. I found replacement batteries for about $5/ea on Amazon. It's much easier to swap batteries, than to sit at a portal for 1/2 hour waiting for the battery to charged enough to run the game for a while. The car charger isn't all that useful when walking around to resonators, or in a high density area.
