Been there, done that. Better...
Something like this has been available for some years in the form of Innovation Futures, a project launched by MIT's Technology Review. Of course, because the trading there requires a relatively high level of sophistication, it appealed to only a relatively limited audience. Still, even though I've been there since the inception (thanks to a news post at Slashdot), I still find it very entertaining.

Re:The article...
I've noticed the same thing since I got a Tablet PC that I use at home. It's easy to sit with the wife while she watches TV and surf the web. Of course, I'm talking with her about what she's watching, browsing ESPN.com to see who the Tigers might pick up during the baseball offseason, keeping up on the markets over at Innovation Futures (where I won the Tablet PC), going through the daily email, and playing a Texas HoldEm table over at PartyPoker. All this is after putting my 3 kids to bed for the night, so this qualifies as "relaxation".
Last night, I ditched all of that to watch the Return of the Kind DVD which just arrived from Amazon. It had been far too long since I focused on a single thing for four hours like that, but it was so rewarding. I didn't get to bed until 1:30, but got to work today feeling more refreshed than I have in ages... -
Do itI know this is a joke, but you actually can "bet" on it (albeit with funny money) at TechReview's Innovation Futures markets. Unlike a bookie, you are betting against other investors rather than the house, which means you have more latitude when it comes to turning the odds in your favor.
/me buys a couple shares of "NO" and waits to flip 'em off once the price gets pumped up by an influx of pessimistic /.ers
Most of IF's predictive markets are based on economic benchmarks, but a month or so ago you could bet on when iTMS would sell its 100,000,000th song. -

Technology Review also has Google futures trading
MIT Technology Review's futures trading marketplace, Innovation Futures, has a comparable Google IPO Watch, predicting when Google will go public, what its market cap will be, and how that will compare to Yahoo!'s market cap. Traders on Innovation Futures are also predicting a cap of $30-35B, but it is by no means a majority. A significant number are still holding on to $25-30B. The site also has a number of other markets dealing with VC and IPOs, Economy and Growth, and trends in technology

Re:Ironic...
Plus, another site that wasn't mentioned, Innovation Futures, offers prizes for successful traders. They are currently running some markets related to Google, and a couple months back, I won a Tablet PC in another contest run there...
