Re:Why stop there?
Actually, Radiohead didn't do so well with their internet release. They actually stopped doing it and now only sell it on iTunes and CD.
Why do you think that the album not being available means that they didn't do so well? It was a publicity stunt. It ended when the physical album was released. As I recall they never released any actual numbers...

If a huge band like Radiohead couldn't make it work with tons of media coverage and massive internet buzz, most smaller bands don't stand a chance.

Re:this should be niceWait until some breakthrough artist figures out they no longer need to be beholden to the record labels for their livelihoods. Try Radiohead. They released their latest album for free online (with an option to pay), though I heard that most people paid either nothing or like 25p for it (I bought the full box set to try and show my support of what they were doing). They're releasing the album on CD but I think they'll still be doing things on their own rather than with a label.. good for them
:) And the best thing of all is that it's a decent album ;) -
Re:RIAA - If you stop feeding them they'll go away
Yup, couldn't have said it better myself.
There's plenty of great independent music available in DRM-Free Download Format out there.
Who needs the RIAA except the RIAA? -
Re:Nothing new here
Yes, only those catchphrase-spouting tuneless wonders like Radiohead and Trent Reznor want musicians to embrace new technologies or give away their material for free.
Oh wait. -
It has been said before -- "I want higher quality"
I just downloaded it. I paid nothing. I want to listen to the album first, and then see how much it is worth to me (hey, I listen to albums for free in the record store before I buy, I listen to all music before I buy). But even if I really like the album, I still will not pay much for it. Why? Quality. Where is the high quality FLAC? What about even a high quality mp3? The disc box is really nice with CD and quality vinyl(see the details http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/MoreInfo2.htm), but I am not going to pay ~$84 for it. Won't do it.
Contrast this to Saul Williams new album, which I am starting to really like. Great simple UI for the download http://niggytardust.com/saulwilliams/download
- 192kbps mp3 for free.
- $5 for 320kbps mp3 -OR- FLAC
160kbps? Seriously? That sucks. It especially sucks if you are mixing mp3s. Phish sells FLAC albums. Primus sells FLAC albums. It doesn't take a much more effort to provide a few more options for consumers that understand and want to purchase quality formats of albums.
I love that artists are starting to see the reality of the interweb music market. But I like the approach of Saul Williams better than Radiohead.

Re:Enough with the spin
Not true. There's Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails (well, sort of), and certainly more to follow.

PROTIP for firefox users
The website failed and left me frustrated.
I'm using Firefox on Linux, and I too had some trouble with the site (the flash navigation didn't work). Fortunately, View -> Page Source revealed Radiohead's secrets. Firefox users, just click here:

Re:I think it's habit - AND convenience
http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/index3.htm is a much better start.

Re:I think it's habit - AND convenience
Have you tried the site? I just did. Frankly, I'm supprised anyone got to the download. It looks like the thing is a big flash background overlaid with images for EVERYTHING instead of text... problem is, on any given page, only half of the images load for me, and a different half each time. The interface seems extremely simple, but when half the images just show the red X, it's useless.
I just TRIED to make an offer on the CD and the experience was a complete failure.
Start at http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/index2.html and click around. Maybe those images are just having a hard time getting across the pond... I get the same results at work and home. -
Re:Meaningless Flash movie?
The actual store page seems to be here: http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/index3.htm (found it by looking at the source of the front page) This almost looks like it was intended to prove people won't pay, my niece's pet rat would have been able to make a better working web site than that...

Re:Or maybe
The label is offering an inferior product to the pirated version. Whether it is service, selection, convenience, trust, or all of the above, the labels need to wake the fuck up and realize that only one thing will ever beat piracy, and that is quality...delivering a quality product every fucking step of the way. People simply will not shell out cash for anything less. No DRM. No PC-incompatible discs. No opt-out marketing bullshit.
Um, right... Radiohead have no label - they ended their contractual obligations to EMI in 2003.
The product is quality. Download it. DRM-free. For free. But do it from here: http://www.inrainbows.com/ -
Radiohead album available!
Just in time for this story, Radiohead's new album is now available for download for the price you name.
Only downside is they are 160 kbps mp3:s, which may not make everybody happy. -
direct link?
How about a direct link to the page where you can pre-order the album (in either form)? http://www.inrainbows.com/

Re:profit margin
Radiohead has already "stolen" this idea with the release of their new album, In Rainbows. You have the option of either buying the discbox, which contains the CD and some extra goodies (which ship December 3) with the digital download (which is available October 10) for 40GBP, or just the digital download for a price you set. Literally, the price for the digital download is an empty textbox, which lets you put in however much you want. Considering the devotion of Radiohead fans, this is genius idea; they're going to make a whole hell of a lot more than if they'd gone a more traditional route for the new album.
