There's a lot of free software out there that will give better skymaps than most books can. After all, the sky changes from minute to minute, not just day to day.

XEphem is my choice. The interface is pretty old-school, but the maps it prints out are perfect for my uses.

KStars has more bells and whistles but, in my experience, doesn't print as well.

As for advice on buying scopes, etc., check these places too.

I think Wikipedia is more a social experiment than anything, but I treat it as a generally valid information source as much as I would other things on the internet. You have to put some amount of trust in others when you use their research.
Yes, you could insert false information into a Wikipedia article, but what would be the incentive? If you don't know information there's no reason to falsify it; nobody's monitoring your Wikipedia contribution progress. "Hahaha, now that kid's paper is going to have inaccurate data" doesn't sound like a really fufilling prank to pull, particularly since you can't really see the results. If someone wanted to destroy a wiki's integrity I think his first instinct would be to erase the content.
Also, yes, anyone can edit a Wikipedia article, but it's just as easy also write a very professional sounding article and post it on a professional looking website and suddenly it's True. The way I see it, the internet on whole isn't extremely reliable unless you take for granted that nobody really wants to maliciously sabotage your research and other people know what they're talking about before they start writing papers about things.
Yes, Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, but so can the internet itself. If the data you're trying to find are that important to you, you should probably check the library or get out there and do the research yourself.

But was it? I did not know that dead people had an opinion. Further, upon questioning many of the people who's names were used - they had no idea a letter had been sent in their name. By what stretch of the imagination is this an honest opinion? And yes. You should be fined. Doesn't always happen - but then if you have a pair of pliers in your back pocket after sundown in Texas you can be hung from the neck until dead and they don't do that either. Just because the laws are there does not always mean they are enforced.

Oh really? Is that what I was saying? That due to the size, money, and influence which Microsoft has - that it is being allowed to set its own terms when it comes to punishment? To flaunt their ability to twist things around so they benefit from what they've done? Or, as the original story pointed out - the punishment does not fit the crime because Microsoft is so powerful that it only takes a few days to get past the punishment. Wow. So just why did we even bother to prosecute them in the first place? We spent hundreds of millions of dollars, thousands of man hours, and we get new computers with Microsoft products installed into our schools so they can extend their monopoly even further? Listen. Your logic is heavily flawed. You are saying that because I said to apply the law that I am a hate monger. When in truth - I just want them to play and suffer by the same rules and laws underwhich the rest of us have to play. And simply because it is Microsoft and simply because you might like them - does not make the rest of us automatically hate mongers. So - sorry, I just don't see your logic.

I certainly hope so! But realistically - it doesn't work that way. There was a recent court case in Galveston, Texas where someone who was clearly a murderer walked free. The guy had lots of money, hired a good lawyer, and although they could find parts of the body - they couldn't find the deceased's head. Therefore he walked free. That was certainly justice!

Realistically though. Why would IBM, Sun Microsystem, too many companies to list them all, lots and lots of people from all sorts of backgrounds (myself included), the European Community, Japan, China, in fact all of Asia, and even Australia - all of them not like the outcome of the Microsoft trial. Are we all hate mongers? Or could there just be a smidgen of truth here about how Microsoft was treated versus - say AT&T? Remember the baby Bells? Ever wonder why that happened? Think they are nicer today? No - they are back to their tricks again. (See: 1,2, 3, and many others via Google's search engine)

However! Tell you what! Without all of the personal attacks. Without all this hate monger junk - why don't you just present your points on whether or not you believe the Justice Department should or should not use a "Divide and Conquer" approach? I was proud to be the recipiant of a letter from my ISP informing me that I was among the "Top 50 Users."

I looked down further to see what I had won but sadly they just wanted to double my yearly fee. I was like "whoa." So I called them and asked what kind of plan it was I signed up for. They said that since I was in the top 50 I would have to pay more or move to DSL (and then pay more). Well I was all thinking maybe you know, this dsl sounds pretty nice, pretty nice But sadly it will not be available in my area "until ever." As the rep explained. So I looked at my statement which said I signed up for something called "Unlimited 56k Dialup Access*" The asterix said something about the 56k not really being capable of going that fast. So I asked the rep what Unlimited means. He said it means up to a point, I fired back like umm you mean "with bounds"? He said no not really.

The trouble was this overworked billing bloak didn't know what his company was advertising. He explained that if my modem stays connected for more than 7 hours a day it causes damage to their modems. Needless to say that it crap for crap. So then he said it didn't do damage but it disallowed other users to dial up. But that;s not even in the TOS I explained.

Dunt dun DUNNNN- The TOS the Terms Of Service- or Talk Of dirty rotten Shist depending on which end of the phone you're on. So he says he'll show me where. 1 minute later I'm on hold. 8 Minutes later he says it's the limited bandwidth clause section 6, which I hapeened to be very farmiliar with. I explained to him the perils of dialup and how real it was ABSOLUTLY IMPOSSIBLE to consume any significant amount of bandwidth on a 56k dialup, gee_willicars them city folk-a jus duna untersand!

He agreed. I asked for the Manger and he said the only person above him was the CEO who was needless to say "Out to Lunch" or if you're on the other end of the phone holy crap I'd better cover my ass.

Well it ended up this way, I called back and asked for Susan, the CEO 8 times one day an hour apart, but she was out to lunch from 9 till 5. I though about driving over there and looking for the overweight broad (See I know shes overweight because she's always eating lunch) but since I'm just a really really lazy person I just canned my service there and started an account at Lanset who despite having a really awful website and horrid DNS servers have been pretty good to me with 60 MB free hosting, no setup fees $96/year and I can have my whole lan sharing the connection legally.

Ok bye. and oh yeah to answer the question I did read the TOS before purchases from both ISP's. InReach just eats.

You see, there are these three branches. The judges may interpet a law, but they have limited enforcement powers. The President can always refuse to enforce a court decision, and Congress can always change the law. And unless it is a Supreme Court decision, there is always appellate court...

I'm sorry, but that isn't the case. The Emergency War Powers Act suspends this system of checks and balances in times of national crisis or emergency, making the Prez the de facto despot... and we've been in a state of national emergency since the run on the banks in the back in the 1930's.
