I was befuddled this past summer as to why I couldn't view network shares on Windows PCs at my work site using my PowerBook over a secure wireless network. Just now, I found out that Samba has been broken since at least 10.4.7, and Apple still hasn't fixed it, but there is a supposed workaround posted here:

In this forum they duiscuss build 9A326 and ZFS. Some posters mention, that you can choose ZFS but it doesn't work (yet) and/or that you can't install OS X on it.
And then I notice that the official name of ZFS is ZFS these days: "The name originally stood for "Zettabyte File System", but is now a pseudo-initialism." Someone should tell Apple.

Funny how much better your searching goes when you know the right keywords! Not only do they talk about running recent builds on non-Apple hardware, they tell you how to do the same!
