Another claimed vulnerability that affects many?
I read that the following Javascript code is sufficient to cause a crash in many Javascript-enabled browsers (Lynx need not apply, and you will need to turn on Javascript to have any chance to see this work):
<HTML>
<SCRIPT> a = new Array(); while (1) { (a = new Array(a)).sort(); } </SCRIPT>
<SCRIPT> a = new Array(); while (1) { (a = new Array(a)).sort(); } </SCRIPT>
</HTML>Copy that into a text file, open it with your favorite web browsers and be prepared to lose work.
But I'm having odd results in two copies of Firefox 1.0. In my installation of Firefox 1.0 (from Fedora Core 3, fully updated) I get a prompt that lets me cancel running the scripts (I get prompted once per SCRIPT element). Running Firefox 1.0 from mozilla.org on Fedora Core 2 (again, fully updated) the browser quickly crashes.
Any hints as to why one Firefox is crashing and the other not? I'm guessing that there is a Javascript execution timeout setting I could adjust with about:config in the FC2 Firefox 1.0 which crashes? If so, which settings are relevant?
Thanks.

Re:Google scraper?
Sorry, but Google doesn't like that.
Good old never-be-evil Google doesn't see anything wrong with scraping thousands of news sites and putting them on their own web site. Scrape Google News, however, and you're suddenly on their lawyers' shit list. -

Oh and Gartner is just SOOOOO accurate...... in its past predictions.
[laughing out loud]
In July 2003, Gartner predicted 10% of all IT jobs (at vendors) and 5% in enterprises would disappear by December 2004. When they show the data on how accurate THAT prediction was, I'll consider being worried about the new results from their dart board.

An apologyOur affectionate troll (various posts):
FreeBSD is dying.Listen, buddy... it's not that we don't trust you (we do! of course we do, why wouldn't we) it's just that.. y'know, all the available sources seem to completely disagree with that statement - unless you count *yourself* as a source, of course.
So, I really would like to apologize on behalf of everybody here in the BSD section if, occasionally, you might be called names like "retard" or "clueless idiot" or "FUD-spreading GNU/troll". Maybe it's because of the academical spirit of the BSD projects that they attract scientific-minded people (duh!..) who tend not to believe in unsupported statements - and even less in statements going against the supported truth.
Besides, I really have to apologize for their complete lack of humour, because you clearly have been doing this for years just to be funny, and not to spread FUD.
On the whole, I hope you can forgive them for their close-mindedness that, I'm sure, is the reason that prevents them from dropping *BSD and switching to GNU/Linux.
Please forgive them, and don't take it personally!(..I don't need to put an explicative closing tag here, do I!..)

Funky calculationsAccording to this article, Apple sold 2.01M ipods in a single quarter recently. At 6% that the parent article claims, that would be about 120K new Mac users per quarter? According to this article, their total computer sales are 836K for about the same time. Ipods driving 14% of their total computer sales? Seems high.

Here are some facts for your reading pleasure
> Can Reverse Engineering Help In Stopping Worms?
If you're running Windows, no, the only thing that can help you is to format your hard drive and install Linux. It's not enough to just buy a computer and log on and hope that Microsoft did their job and that Windows will protect you, because I am here to tell you the same thing that millions of others will tell you... Microsoft didn't do a good job and Windows won't protect you.
Windows, whether you choose to believe it or not, is the worst OS on the planet. Microsoft Windows makes it rather easy for a hacker or script kiddie to break into your Windows machine and steal your personal information or install a keylogger or mouse mapper. A keylogger keeps track of all the keys you press and sends this info to the person who installed the key logger. A mouse mapper collects info about where you mouse cursor is at any given time along with which mouse buttons you press, this info is also sent to the person who installed the mouse mapper. Windows also makes it far to easy to catch viruses/worms/trojans/malware/spyware/etc. If you are using Windows and you haven't become a victim of identity theft, it is only a matter of time before you do.
Besides that, Microsoft lies, cheats, and steals to promote their company - they even got caught trying to fake evidence in court. Their "Get The Facts" campaign is the biggest bs-fest I've seen in a long time. Does this sounds like a company you want to do business with? Do you really think such an untrustworthy company is going to help you or indemnify you if your Windows operating system causes you to get into trouble?
Here are some facts:
- Follow this link for a security report entitled: Security Report: Windows vs. Linux
- Here is a nice little report about Viruses: Linux vs. Windows
- And here is The U.S. government's warning to Web surfers to stop using Internet Explorer (IE) browser.
Windows is just full of problems and here is how to solve those problems. First of all, you need a good Linux operating system. You can go to Distrowatch and find more information about Linux distributions than you could ever want. You can also go to the Mandrakelinux website and check out their Linux distro and see some screenshots of Mandrakelinux.
Secondly, learn about your computer. You paid money for it, and you trust it with personal/private information. You must learn how to protect your computer if you expect your computer to protect the information that it contains. Microsoft Windows is not going to protect you or your computer - as many people have already learned.
It is not in your best interest to use Microsoft products because they are known only for failure and problems. Switch to Linux and learn about this awesome operating system. You'll thank me later :) -

Windows Media remains integrated into the OS because Windows Media's processing is being handled at the DirectX level - that said, I don't know of a single vulnerability in Windows Media itself.
I know of at least one, and I'm pretty sure there have been a few more, too.

Re:the internets!!!
Indeed. The Internet2 consists of a super-set of technologies that are currently independent from the existing internet. i.e. The two networks are connected, but not all internet applications are compatible with Internet 2. Which is really too bad. I'd love to use a pipeline or two.

FreeBSD, Stealth-Growth Open Source Project
Nearly 2.5 Million Active Sites running FreeBSD

Re:*Cringe*
If you really want to know why Novell latched on to Linux then you just need to pay attention to what Chris Stone (Vice Chairman of the office of CEO and primary person behind the open source moves) has said about it. Basically, he blames the decline in NetWare to the fact that nobody except Novell write software for NetWare because it is such a bad development environment. Switching to Linux gave them a platform that developers will happily code for and it also gets rid of the dreaded "Legacy" label that has been haunting them for several years. The scary thing is that Stone, just today announced that he is leaving Novell for "other pursuits" http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/
3 431541, and based on previous ignorant statements by Jack Messman (Chairman and CEO), I'm not sure that anyone else in upper management at Novell really "gets it". -
Re: Google already kicked DoubleClick's booty
"However, banner advertising is like TV advertising. Its "presence"."
X10 went out of business. That's how effective "presence" was. Who the hell cares, if "everyone" knows about it. Clearly it didn't work.
Google, on the other hand, generated about $800M in revenue in the last quarter. From what I've read that's almost entirely advertising revenue. DoubleClick, on the other hand, made $81M in their last quarter.
Looks like "presence" doesn't really pay. -

Fine, but why isn't ProPolice distributed/enabled by default in gcc?
Yeah, it's "been around for ages!".
But, if that's the case, then why do we have buffer overflow fixes in OpenSSH , Mozilla, and Apache?
See, I know I could probably install this compiler extension, and pass flags and all that. I'm sure Gentoo nuts do it all the time.
But why the hell is this not done by default, everwhere, if it's been available for NN years? This is where Microsoft may actually be ahead of us.
But, I guess pointing out this unpopular fact makes me a troll? -
Had One, Still Prefer The Treo
The Zaurus line is a great one; I've had three models (5000D, 5500, 5600). However, my Treo does everything that the Zaurus can do, and comes with a phone! Since the Treo is a non-MS device, it also satisfies my desire not to support Microsoft. Of course, the Treo 650 will be even better.

Re:It came out, has thousands of members
Lawyers have said that Google News can never be run for profit, not that it must remain in "lawyer-induced beta" like that headline claims. Google News qualifies for Fair Use provisions as long as it is not a for-profit entity. It doesn't matter whether you call it "alpha," "beta," or "Suzy." Google News cannot make money; its entire purpose is to copy little samples of images and news from other companies' web sites.
Now if you want to start syndicating Google News yourself, Google has some news for you. -

I never contended that what they did was legal, only that the lawsuits have NOT stopped the downloading.
They have dramatically reduced activity. And they have certainly stopped those we were doing it.
but now you feel she not only should have known better it was justifiable for the RIAA to not only sue her but refuse to drop the case when the facts surfaced
No, I content that 12-yr olds should not be allowed to operate unsupervised, and that if she does, she should be held responsible for her actions as well should her guardians for being so remiss.
His grandkids had installed the software when visiting without his permission or knowledge. They downloaded some music, and left it running, set to start on startup. So the real violaters were his grandkids, he was an innocent bystander. Yet again your reaction is he got what he deserved.
Yes. He was operating a machine he was unqualified to operate, and was as such responsible for his ignorance.
Funny that there was no accusation in my post.
Yes, there was. The accusation was that Congress was owned by corporations and that RIAA/MPAA had purchased this law in a corrupt exchange.
As far as your claim they aren't working, get a clue. Do some research.
they got ripped off when they signed their contracts with the record companies
I can enter into any contract I want within the bounds of the law. There are thousands of very weatlhy artists. Even if they were ripped off by the RIAA, it doesnt make it okay for them to be ripped off by people who want without thinking of the law.
How soon we forget the studies that have shown that active downloaders buy more music
Irrelevant. That's irrelevant. If I make music and choose to release only to people I want, thats MY RIGHT. NOT YOURS TO BARTER AWAY WILLY-NILLY.
I'm far more concerned about things like that being prevented that Congress wasting time and money to pass yet more laws to go after music downloaders.
Lame argument. Congress can do more than aone thing at a time. Congress will continue to pass laws until the issue is resolved.
someone trojans your machine and starts sharing files off of it, then you find out 3 weeks later and spend 2 weeks trying to get it stopped weren't you "knowingly" sharing for those 2 weeks, even though you were trying to stop it? Yes you were, and you too could wind up in jail thanks to this law.
If you find out, you pull the plug. 30-seconds. Knowingly has a legal definition, you should look it up. It means you know what you are doing, and choose to do it anyways. Figure it idiot. You can make up lame examples all you want, it doesn't change the fact that this law is completely justified.
The public has spoken, repeatedly, by their actions that they do not support the RIAA's current business model any longer, that they will not stop downloading music even in the face of adverse consequences.
This isn't about a business model. This is about the law. The public has said that if P2P infringement is easy, they'll do it. Nothing more.
Further threat of jail time will just further crowd the already overcrowded jails with -- people who downloaded some music online. Now that's a good use of taxpayer dollars.
Ohh right. We should lock up murderers. You and I know both know that jail time will be for only the most extreme cases, and even then in a limited format.
Let's be real here. You have no idea idea what this law will or will not do. You haven't read the text, even though it is readily available. You have no idea what effect on musicians, artists, programmers, FOSS advocates, or whatnot will be if uninhibited P2P is allowed to proceed.
You haven't thought anywhere past the basic "Congress is in the pocket of the RIAA" and "Illegal music downloading helps muscians becauase it makes them more popular" and "why are we bothering with these crimes when crimes X Y and Z aren't stamped out yet". Typical childish perspectives. -

Re:Interesting minor point in article
But he has made no secret of his opposition to the online sharing of copyrighted material. Last week he signed an executive order prohibiting state employees from using software designed for file sharing.
According to this article it appears that:
While the order prohibited the use of state resources to illegally download copyrighted material, it specifically allowed for legitimate uses of the controversial software -- in moderation.
So not quite so evil as it sounds.. -
I've heard this tune before ...
I thought last year was supposed to be the 'worst ever' according to this article anyway.
Hmmm, let's review:
2003 - worst year ever
2004 - viruses sharply up (from the worst year ever)
So - when does that 'Great Security Initiative' of 2002 start working? Microsoft please - the authenticated code approach doesn't work. Sandboxes do. -
Re:Sun Jealousy towards IBM
I'll be convinced IBM contributes as much as Sun to OSS when I see that IBM has GPLed AIX like Sun will GPL Solaris...
Funny, the latest I've heard was that Sun still isn't saying what license they plan to use for Solaris. Do you have a link to an article where Sun claims they will use the GPL? All I've heard from them is that they want to "take the model with Java and bring it to Solaris."
Personally, as a Linux user, I'm much interested in IBM's real contributions to the Linux kernel. Their intent is to make Linux capable of replacing AIX eventually.
I'm not just talking about mainframe and POWER ports, as an anonymous coward above suggested, either. Of course, we all know about JFS, NUMA, SMP scalability, and EVMS (the last of which wasn't accepted, in the end). IBM has also contributed work on ext2/3, IA-64, PCI hotplug, udev, USB, and a number of other projects.
...or that IBM has given a huge office solution like OpenOffice...How many office solutions do we need? How about a huge software development solution like Eclipse, instead?
...or that IBM supports Gnome with code contribution/HIG...How about donating code to projects like Mozilla, Samba, and of course Apache (and more Apache)?
Finally, let's not forget that it's IBM that is paying the legal bills that will prove that Linux is free of whatever UNIX intellectual property may still exist, while Sun has been pumping funds into SCO's war chest.

Re:It's too late for JabberThere is no viable business model to provide free Jabber services just as there is no money in free email with POP3 and IMAP access.
And commerical businesss charge their employees how much for their email accounts? Nothing?
While a nice analysis it ignores the fact that many companies provide "internet" services on their own intranet and they may use commericial software to do that. That is what the Apple product is aimed at and that is what the upcoming Oracle server are targeted for. Not to mention the handful of folks selling commerical servers based upon different protocols (IBM, etc.).
I suspect a number of companies are wondering if it is a good idea for their "internal" IM travel out to AOL, Yahoo, MSN and back.
