SCO To Counter Groklaw With 'Fair' Coverage

Root Zone Changed
An anonymous reader writes "The day before yesterday the root zone was silently changed for the first time in 5 years. The change was to J.ROOT-SERVERS.NET that is now managed by Verisign. The usual sites don't breathe a word about this change however as one would expect for such a change to be properly announced. An interesing sidenote is this thread on the IETF discussion list." the_proton writes "The server j.root-servers.net has changed IP address to 192.58.128.30. The new root zone hints can be grabbed from ftp://rs.internic.net/domain/named.root or ftp://ftp.internic.net/domain/named.root. The new zone serial number is 2002110501." -

Why Is Internic Restricting WHOIS Queries?
Ötti asks: "I just noticed that InterNIC started to restrict access to its WHOIS database. That puts sites like Allwhois into an awkward situation, since they cannot provide lookups anymore. That might sound like a minor problem to those of you located in the U.S., but in other parts of the world it is very convenient to have a unified interface to all registrars in the world. And once again it raises the ultimate questions: Who owns the informations on domain name holders? Why is it not publicly accessible and how can organizations like ICANN help to improve matters?" -

Well, it appears that a number of you noticied NSI's latest escapade. Yes, this time our friends have decided to create company profiles of all registrants - including addresses, ownership, number of employees, years in business, annual sales, and phone and facsimile numbers. Mmm...I thought spam was bad enough. Who the heck is the . in .com? Um-a bunch of you needed to be told this was a joke (the last sentence). Sarcasm, folks. -
Gore Staffer Website Illegal?
Joshua R. Poulson writes in to say " The domain gore2000.org was set up by a government employee at the whitehouse, who is listed in the Internic's contact information. Campaign finance rules require that no government employee may work on partisan activity while on duty or at work, so there could be a problem for Gore. ZDnet covers it in this article. Whether or not the staffer was at work or on duty, it should be noted that the email address given is on a government computer."
