As the successor to the sleeper hit Uplink and the IGF award winning Darwinia, this is one of the most eagerly awaited indy games of this year. Based on the game of thermonuclear war played in the film WarGames, DEFCON gives you the opportunity to nuke the hell out of your friends (and enemies), with the player who loses the least crowned victorious. With this being Introversion's first game for sale by download only (it's available on Steam as well as through their own website), does this mark the end of indy games being sold in shops?"

It is hoped that the deal will help boost sales of Darwinia, and the profile of Introversion Software, which has been struggling against the 'big boys' of the industry."

    Thanks to DIY Games for its story noting that Introversion Software, "creator of the critically acclaimed hacker sim Uplink", has announced its next game: Darwinia, a "...monstrously fast [PC] shoot-'em-up, influenced by Cannon Fodder and Syndicate", according to PC Gamer UK. There's a very basic official site with the first screenshots, but fansite Darwinia Warfront has some further information on the early-in-development title, quoting PC Gamer as explaining you'll be "playing as a gamer, inserted into the network of retro videogame consoles... you're shooting sprites, stick men, and space-invaders - objets d'art from the annals of videogame history."

    Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to Gamespy's new guide to the hacking section of Enter The Matrix. This extra section of the game brings up a DOS-style interface, even on Playstation 2/Xbox/Gamecube, and lets you 'hack' to get pictures, movies, and extras from the million-selling but still controversial Atari-published title. Reminds us a little of the low-profile but excellent PC/Mac hacking game, Uplink?

It's released under Windows and Linux, costs a mere 25 USDs, and has no middleman to jack prices up. Of course, that means it's not available in stores, nor will it be seen on TV, but according to Newsforge, it's got great gameplay. So, will 25 bucks, a fresh game idea, and a Linux release make others in the gaming world stand up and take notice?"
