Looks like a bunch of irc client authors (and even more) are putting their heads together to come up with DCC2, a replacement for the the poorly designed DCC IRC file transfer specification. The old protocol was basically based on a usenet post, but this new one is looking like it'll be a full-blown standard. It's currently an IETF internet working draft. Read the press release at DCC2.org."

NumberField writes "According to an article by Steven Levy posted on MSNBC, Jay Walker of PriceLine fame is talking about a system he calls US HomeGuard. His plan is to hire large numbers of unsophisticated users to monitor Internet-connected security cameras looking for suspicious activity. Although many security details (i.e., DOS attacks, cryptography, privacy) need to be handled carefully, it's a weird enough idea that it might actually work..."

maiden_taiwan asks: "We're constructing a free groupware application by integrating well-known open source components: apache webserver, inn news server, ircd chat, scp for file transfer, etc. Unfortunately, each app has its own incompatible concept of a 'user identity.' Apache has the htpasswd module, IRC has nicknames, scp has public keys, NetNews has the poster's email address, and so forth. Has anyone managed to integrate a similar suite of apps using a single sign-on model, where a user has a single identity that is understood and carried through all these apps?"

Lots of submissions regarding a bumpy week for EFnet, mostly short on fact and long on rumor. Several high-capacity servers have either dropped off entirely or limited their connections to local clients due to DOS attacks. We got one good link about the situation; anyone else have more info? Is this a real problem or just normal roughness? I'm not an IRC regular these days but I've never seen a stable IRC network.
