The real reason why SP1 is not ready
http://www.istartedsomething.com/20080205/real-reason-vista-sp1-not-released/
Sinofsky's devs still have work to do, it seems. I mean come on; what the fuck changed between XP and Vista to kill file transfer times like that over a 1gbit network? -
Re:This Just In
What kind of moronic moderator doesn't recognize parody and sarcasm?
From the I-know-I'm-going-to-be-modded-down-but-I-don't-care dept:
Maybe someone hired/paid (or gifted?) to make Microsoft look good?
Also, there are those in the industry that think Microsoft is doing no wrong and they are making our lives easier because they provide free (only Microsoft compatible) code on MSDN for everyone to ingrain in their applications.
These are the people I like to call the "greeds". They only think of themselves when they create something or use a tool. They don't think, "Gosh, this might be bad for the industry...maybe I should try out this competitive product" because said product doesn't integrate into every aspect of Windows allowing you to launch calculator with the click of a button.
I work with one such person who insists that .NET is the savior of the world. He also subscribes (almost exclusively) to MSDN blogs to get the latest Microsoft PR related news and strictly adheres to "Microsoft standards" for coding and application design whenever someone on MSDN writes about it. I swear, if someone from MS came out next week to tell everyone they need to add 4 lines of filler between every line of code, he'd be the first to go back and edit every program and insert 4 lines of comments between every line of code. -

Actually this runs across products
For a year or more now Microsoft has been getting tighter and tighter about what information about their plans and dates can get out. It has been really bad getting info even when you are on one of their TAP programs. Date for the RTM? Hell - you won't even get a date for the next Beta version most of the time. What's in? What's out? Not a chance - you'll get it when you get it. It is so bad now that they need a Minster of Truth to determine what to tell people - http://www.istartedsomething.com/20071207/director-windows-disclosure/.

Re:PC Gamers can smell a Rat - And it's VistaActually I'd say they are aware of the problems and are trying to fix them. Whether or not they fix them and whether or not that results in faster adoption remains to be seen.
huckster Microsoft cheerleaders saying how great it is but this is the internet and the voices of everyone else are heard loud and clear so the lying isn't being believed.
Alternatively, you can also hear the FUDsters and hysteria-inducing misleading rants about the DRM boogeyman, UAC and just about anything else in Vista. The "poor Google, they are being victimized by Microsoft" crap when Vista search is much better than GDS and all Google had to do was give the user the option to shut down the indexing service. The wailing cries by the AV snake oil vendors. And let's not forget the concerted efforts by the FSF to convince everyone that Vista is "defective by design" and directing their minions to the closest Amazon product page to astroturf and vandalize the hell out of everything. It goes on and on and on.
I sure as hell haven't seen much more than FUD coming from the groups of people who would be the most affected once Vista gains traction. I don't have a problem with people doing that so much - Microsoft is known for those types of tactic as well. The problem is that the same people doing all this are the ones that have repeatedly claimed they own the moral high ground. The ones that claim Microsoft is not "honest". FUD always works both ways. It erodes your credibility when people realize you've been feeding them soup to undercut your competitors. It happened to Microsoft, and it will happen to them as well.

Re:Also see
Why, it isn't just that.
WPF is capable of producing beautiful, beautiful hardware accelerated programs.
When apps start using I/O prioritization, you will be able to, say, defrag or copy with a low priority while still maintaining responsiveness.
Plenty of audio effects like dynamic space filling on newer devices.
Things like SuperFetch which use all your memory as a cache are undeniably good.
The new network stack has better speeds. http://www.istartedsomething.com/20060925/vista-ma ke-torrents-faster/
Come on. Vista is *factually* better than XP. The perception in the slashdot groupthink is different, though. -
Re:Vector-based UI? Where?I use Vista every day at work, and I have never seen such an app. All the built-in Windows apps look just the same as they did in XP I'm fairly sure that all of Vista's built in applications use WPF and are thus DPI-independant. If you're running at the default 96dpi, I'm not sure in what way you expect them to look different to in XP. I think the point is that when you change the dpi, they scale smoothly and unblockily (I assume you don't see it with magnifier because it just enlarges the pixels, it doesn't redraw everything). IStartedSomething has a nice gadget where you can see the same screenshot at different DPIs, if you want to compare them.
There's a list of WPF-based applications here. -
Re:Netcraft confirms it: Windows 2000 is dead.
Because its NOT grey?! We've been using grey for what, the past 15 years? Its getting abit old. But then, perhaps your one of those people who would prefer to stay with a CLI instead of a Gui? Themes are for people who enjoy having an environment where everything is personalized to their liking. Not all people like grey (cos, well, its boring.
;) Why do you think no-one makes grey devices any more? ;)), and grey usually just doesn't go with anything, what with all the colour now days in computers, assuming you've noticed, but I'm guessing not since you mentioned "interesting" and linux in the same paragraph, so your probably trying to stay away from that as far as possible. But thats your choice, but some people in this world are eager to move on to more friendly computing. ;) The theme I was refering to: http://www.istartedsomething.com/20061029/royale-n oir/ -
much too high frequencies
is i just me or are these vista sounds teeth grinding high? PAT

Preview of Vista sounds
Comparison with Windows XP. I do actually find applications making various sounds useful, because it means I don't have to keep checking or stare at them to check for significant events. There are a lot of sounds in Vista that, by comparison, seem like they're trying to "hide" from the user. Some of them are much less noticeable. In particular, I noticed that the "battery low" and "battery critical" sounds were pretty generic and surprisingly upbeat.

do your part and call MS out
Hey, I found a fairly slick blog claiming to be completely independantly produced by an 18yr old university student. However, it's clearly a Microsoft site complete with Apple-bashing, a NineMSN commercial, a video titled "Vista speech recognition screencast: It works!", a story titled "MSNBC deceived the public: Vista's speech recognition demo" and MS-critic bashing, with a few lame attempts to throw people of their fairly rank scent.
Microsofts Faux Blog
I thought you could do your part and call MS out on this one by leaving a comment to the effect of "We know this is a Microsoft astroturf advertisment that intentionally aims to mislead readers to beleive messages that benefit the corporation." ...Or you could just flame be and tell me how redundant this is. -
