Re:Point of order....
Asus is now sticking its head in the sand hoping the avalanche it started will go away, after realising backstabbing Xandros with a FUD campaign for the sake of getting a few dollars more discount on their XP OEM licenses was only successful in driving customers to other brands.

Re:Does it ...
run Linux? Seriously.
The first few marketing seem to show it running Moblin, which is based on Linux and is 100% the perfect OS and interface for this style of computer.
But of course, the spec sheet lists Windows XP. And lately Asus has been totally putting out for Microsoft.
One of these days, I keep praying that OEMs will wise up to the fact that the importance of quality software is rapidly overtaking the importance of the quality of the hardware.

It is better with Windows (no, seriously!)
I wouldn`t rely on Asus for any kind of Linux support. If you want to run Linux, stay away from Asus and especially netbooks of them.
Why? They have a site to explain why, they openly say their products run best under Windows.
Here is the news story http://www.osnews.com/story/21589/Asus_Microsoft_Launch_Anti-Linux_Netbook_Campaign
Here is the site: http://www.itsbetterwithwindows.com/
You would wish it was a joke but it isn`t. Perhaps Asus better go back to their mainboard and Apple manufacturing business.

Re:Corporate FUD is the real enemy here
Parent isn't a troll, that's another M$ FUD campaign...

Re:I think they're finally listening to slashdot
Even without a large install base, Linux continues to be a force in the market.
I'm not sold on this whole "small install base for linux" idea. There are over 1000 different distributions of Linux and hundreds of thousands of applications, not including versions. This is not the work of three guys in their mom's basement.
With regard to marketing netbooks, apparently The Register apparently thinks they're having another Seinfeld Moment with their "It's better with Windows" Asus comarketing campaign, which strangely enough doesn't require Silverlight. Apparently, "It's better with Windows" has something to do with XP, Microsoft Works, and your teen daughter uploading pictures of herself from wherever she's roaming unattended while you've abandoned her and your hot Latina wife to be on the road spilling coffee on yourself. Yeah, that's living the dream. For extra laughs, it's set to banjo music. Highly recommended, it's a must-see. They could have gotten a little edgier by showing the photos actual teens upload to the Internet, but that one's probably not even suitable for cable. Since the hot points are "trusted", "familiar" and "compatible" it's pretty clear they're trying to prevent sales of Vista 7. I can't wait to see how this works out.

Re:How much money changed hands?
Right Mister investigative journalist, how do you disprove the following:
- Go to http://uk.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=15908
- On the left side there's an advertisement for the Eee pc which links to http://www.asus-uk.com/eeepc/about/
Ok so by your own admittance we've proven that asus-uk.com at the very least is in fact an official Asus website. Right now let's take it one step further, here's a link to another page on that same domain:
Still asus-uk.com right? Read the page and see that it states: "It's better with Windows®" and links to http://www.itsbetterwithwindows.com/
I'd like to hear how you're going to wiggle your way out of this one. Oh it was just the UK branch, you say? Oh, it was just a lone mad sales guy? Asus was never serious about putting Linux on their netbooks, laptops or whatever from the get go. If you've ever used an Eee pc you'd know that the custom Xandros distro stuff was a disaster and anyone worth their salt would immediately replace it a properly configured distro (in a lot of cases Ubuntu). Asus well never get any money from me again.

Re:Good find, mod parent Informative!
You're just a little offensive in your language (probably why you're modded as Flamebait), but I fully agree. Let me summarize this to Linux nerds:
1. Asus don't care about you
2. You should NOT care about Asus
In addition, all points mentionned in the website http://itsbetterwithwindows.com/ (whether it comes from Asus, Microshit or whoever else) are true for the vast majority of people buying computers.
If you think Linux is better than Windows, you can grab any windows-based device and replace that shit by your favorite distro. That's what Linux is all about. Freedom of choice. -
it's better with windows
No mention of anyone walking off with all your financial information, merely by clicking on an URL or opening an email attachment. Oh, wait, at 3:30 a bit about family safety, just how long will it take young Juan to bypass it and find the pjorn ? I see at 3:38 tobacco is deemed unsafe to even look at on a web site. Assault rifle I guess gets through no problem. Who would stoop to exploiting parental fears to sell product

Re:hey Asus
The site is one big image.

Re:That's a damn shameCredit to a poster above who pointed this out:

Lame site, and a bizarre video
It's a really awkward ad and there is a guy at 1:43 mark doing the nazi salute.

Link
There is no way that this website is endorsed by Asus/Microsoft.
I think you've been had, Slashdot.
