Re:Glassfish is a Must-Have for Oracle
> JavaFX has been a solution looking for a problem
There certainly was a lot of energy poured into it, though. I feel bad for folks like Josh Marinacci, who has been working on it for a while. Seems like every other Java Posse episode had some mention of JavaFX and its progress (or lack thereof).

Re:Probably Also Contending with OpenLaszlo
JavaFX is already built to run on J2ME. There's a good interview on The Java Posse this week where they mention that.

podcasts++, videocasts--
The beauty of podcasts is that I can listen to them in my car - videocasts demand my full attention. It's great to be able to keep up with the latest Java news while sitting in traffic; makes that time feel less wasted. This interview wasn't too bad neither.

JavaPosse discussion
The JavaPosse had some notes on this a while back and they seem to keep an eye on the issue. That podcast definitely worth listening to once or twice a week to keep up with the latest news.

FindBugs is awesome
As the lead guy on a "competing" static analysis framework - PMD - I can say that FindBugs is definitely a great piece of work. It catches all sorts of complicated problems with concurrency, does forwards/backwards data flow analysis, etc, etc. It's pretty sweet. Dr Pugh, who runs the project at the University of Maryland, did a JavaPosse interview that's some more good info on the project and where it's going.
Of course, if you really want to do source code analysis (vs bytecode analysis, which is what FindBugs does), then go for PMD, and [plug] get the book! [/plug] -
Podcasts
I find podcasts a great time saver for keeping up with things you are interested in. Not all of mine are technology or computer related but several are.
Although not the only source of info, you can listen to them on your commute or while doing other mundane things.
As for Java, I find http://javaposse.com/ a great listen with interesting bits of info even if I don't agree with everything they come out with. -
How many are "streaming"?
Most of the folks I know just download the MP3s in one shot, put them on a player and listen to them on the commute. The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs was good for a couple of weeks... and there's the excellent JavaPosse for keeping up with the latest Java news.
But anyhow, I never "stream" these recordings; I just download them for offline listening. -
The JavaPosse podcast....
...has been tracking the various Sun Java-related giveaways; you can hear them talk about the Java Studio Creator and Java Studio Enterprise giveaway in JavaPosse # 13.
I highly recommend the JavaPosse podcasts; it's a great way to keep up with the latest developments in Java. Haha, get it, developments! Anyhow. They do a nice job of tracking things that most Java developers may not be using but will be someday - i.e., the recent discussions of the Mustang Hotspot speed improvements and such.
Disclaimer: They just interviewed me about PMD and my book PMD Applied. But still! -
