Jupiter Media Metrix == con artists
Consider who is bringing you this information and take it with a grain of salt. Jupiter is in the business of consulting, and is on nearly every reporter's Rolodex as a source of that all-important statistic to anchor whatever tech story they're writing. So right off the bat they have a potential conflict of interest -- accuracy v. self-promotion as "the source" the data.
If you listen carefully, nearly every time a web usage statistic is cited it will be attributed to either Jupiter or Forrester Research -- another (surprise) consulting firm. Listen to the news for these names and you'll be impressed how lazy and naive reporters can be, they often do a lot less research than it appears.
Next, the NYT profiled them a couple of years ago in the Sunday Magazine. I don't have a link, but recommend you consider buying it (and I never do that!). Basically, it detailed how little experience the average analyst has; how difficult and unscientific it is to come up with data on things like banner ad clicks or to extrapolate tech trends; and quoted one analyst admitting that they were instructed, should the media call with a question they couldn't answer, they should make something up. Often they are spectacularly wrong, but who calls them on it? Again, the all-important goal is to get their name in the press, Jupiter is willing to give an opinion, it's free advertising. Note how Jupiter's name made it into even this short posting?
I hate to think of businesses making important decisions based on such loosely-derived bits of data. So when I see a spam prediction such as here, I know there's a fair chance it's either an uneducated guess or simply pulled out of someone's ass. Maybe they're right, but I'd like to hear about their methodology. If they say they just went to the Oracle at Delphi (don't those names sound familiar?) then get on with our lives. Spam will still be a problem either way; there are proven ways to fight it; realistically we will never allow it to get to such levels.
I encourage anyone interested not to believe me and do their own research. IMHO, this is one of the biggest scams this side of the pollsters and brokerage houses. I am deeply contemptuous of their work. Just a statement of opinion, not libel, no siree.
P.S. May I throw in that I don't like seeing spam victims blamed for their plight. I have been scrupulous with my email for years and still the spam is inexorably growing, largely because of some idiot who opted-in to a dozen things mistakenly typing in my email address instead of his. Now my address is burned into a CD somewhere. Fault is unnecessary; and regardless of fault, the blame lies with the spammer. Naive users do not "deserve" to have their email paralyzed, rather they deserve our sympathy and help. -
Another vote for roll-your-ownI'm the lead architect for a federal agency's website. We have nearly 40K pages. We have pretty extensive requirements, and therefore researched a large number of commercial CMS products. We purchased one in the six figures, and we're sorry we did. I've come to the realization that most CMS systems are really toolkits and extensive consulting is needed to get them to do what you want. And the more changes you make, the more it becomes a custom system. Our consultants had to rewrite several parts of it to suit our needs, rendering some of the built-in features useless, and making future upgrades a major pain. In the end, it never worked as specified in their Statement of Work and we are pursuing our legal and financial options.
We've decided that the best thing to do is roll your own. Not to write a CMS from scratch, but rather to perform a tactical application of best-of-breed Open Source products (perhaps some inexpensive commercial ones where necessary) in a componentized fashion, using a database as the central hub for data and state information.
We're not the only ones in this predicament. Evidently this is quite common. See this recent press release from Jupiter Research, an internet industry analysis firm. Here's one interesting quote from the article:
Although just under one-third (31 percent) of companies surveyed have developed homegrown content management systems, Jupiter analysts expect the number potentially to double by 2004 as companies recover from - and react to - expensive, failed systems.

it doesn't say "per person", michael just added that himself, either way you look at it the quote is stupid. If they are saying 1400 per day for the entire internet then surely they are saying that spam is going to be almost stamped out by 2006. If they are saying 1400 per day per person then email simply will not be a viable communication mechanism by 2006. If Stefanie Olsen (the C-Net staff writer responsible for this) was to learn how to use a url we could have some idea where the hell she got this mythical number from. Alternatively someone over at C-Net could proof read her articles and tell her she is smoking crack.

I'm still waiting for you to look at "real life" statistics, and not ones that skew them toward your beliefs. Hey, if you can show a real world study that shows Linux on the desktop with any sort of marketshare > 1%, I'll admit I was wrong. So far, you haven't shown jack, except a lot of wrong assumptions (Google "most popular site"???).
Just out of curiosity, are you willing to admit that Linux on the desktop is just not there, or do you "just know" that it's better than what the numbers show?

Re:This seems a little bizarre.But we can tell - the total is 50.4%, so subtracting out AOL, MS and Yahoo we get a titanic 3.4% for number four, whoever it is.
According to the Jupiter Media Metrix site, the 4th place spot goes to none other than X10.com. Doesn't surprise me since just about every other site has a stupid pop-under from them.

Re:Pop-unders costing less than other ads?
They don't seem to be aware how hated it's made them to do both the mass mailings and the pop-unders, and sites selling them need to know too.
With results like this, they're not likely to realize this for quite some time.Of course, Media Metrix is treating every ad display as a page view, which really makes the statistics misleading.
