A Hardware Threepack
Johnath writes: "This just happens to be a great time to be a hardware junkie. For those interested in learning more about the metal under their PC's hood, Tom's Hardware has a great intro to PCB manufacturing, Ars Technica has recently written an architectural study of the P4, and ExtremeTech has a decent look at the South Bridge." The circuit board article is really good - explains it better than the textbooks I've seen. -
Anarchy Online - The Perils Of Pushing Products
Johnath writes: "Anarchy Online was supposed to be the next big thing in MMORPG [?] s. It was huge, it was complex, it was sophisticated. Unfortunately, it was also released far far FAR before its time. The AO forums are filling up with negative posts (which are then apparently being deleted by moderators) and the reviews, which AO reps asked people not to write are starting to come out anyhow." Update: 07/12 5:03 PM EST by CT : Links were randomly redirecting people, so I dropped them. -
Building The Ubervirus
Johnath writes: "The HNN has a rather eye-opening article about a potential disaster dangling overhead. It's not so much that the ideas presented are revolutionary -- most /. readers would probably come up with a similar scheme, if called upon to design a killer net virus, but nevertheless, it pretty lucidly addresses the potential damage." -
New Tech In Data Retrieval
Johnath writes: "Story over at Science News about magnetoresistive microscopy, which allows very high-res inspection of magnetic media. The article is touting it primarily as a forensic tool, and gets me thinking -- how many passes of write-over-with-random-data are now required to securely delete a file?" -
Tripwire Going GPL
Johnath writes: "Maybe it's a little early to break out the party hats, but after noticing that a new version of Tripwire had been released, I checked up on their site and noticed they are going to open source it. Supposed to open it up this fall, and under the GPL no less." There are a lot of people who swear by Tripwire, it'll be nice to see this come to fruition. One thing that's odd - This only applies to Tripwire for Linux.
