Re:Huh?
Nice try, but we were talking about the GIMP alternative, which is Photoshop, not the full suite. Here is photoshop CS4, it can be had slightly cheaper elsewhere. For the full CS4 suite, which you referenced and includes Photoship, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat 9 Pro, Dreamweaver, Flash Pro, and Fireworks, $400 is about $1400 off retail. There is no decent FOSS product that is even close in functionality to most of thos programs, so until there is $400 is a damn good deal.
Photoshop CS3 is harder to find, but it can be had here for about $90, and this one is not a student version. CS3 has 95-99% of the features of CS4 and is more than enough for what almost all digital creators need.
The CS3 design premium suite is about $250. Again, kids buy snowboards and stuff that costs more than that, so if it's a serious hobby there is no reason young artists can't too. Save your pennies, seriously.

Re:In the Open Source World?
I would recommend against charging for education. Education will simply stick with the (heavily-discounted for education) Microsoft development products if you do.
Visual Studio Professional is free to students if your school participates in MSDNAA (MSDN Academic Alliance). VS2008 is also available on Microsoft's Channel 8 site if your school is a DreamSpark participant OR if you can prove to JourneyEd that you're a student. -
Re:Professional Tools
Also - this is not open to any student in the countries listed. There is a list of about 42 schools in the US that are plugged into their student verification system. In Belgium it is 2 schools, China 3 schools, etc.
You might want to read a little more... https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com/StudentIdOptions.aspx and http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp?itmNo=11111726 which makes it a lot more then 42 US schools. -
Cheap bastards
You free software hippies, don't get me wrong, I love free software, and publish most of my works under a BSD license, but however, most of the fucking world uses Office. Not OPENOffice, Microsoft Office. You're talking about 10-17 year old kids who most of the time, could tell the difference between the two products and be easily confused. Yeah you will come among the smart ones who can work both products easily without instruction, but there's very few. The two office suites are designed differently. But my main point is, it's NOT that expensive, if your school is under a Student Select agreement, you can get it under $100 for Office 2007 Pro. http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp?ItmNo=870

Re:I'd get into making SWF games, but..
If you are a university student then you can get a discount rate from the school bookstore or http://www.journeyed.com/home.asp. I got my copy for $99 this way.
Of course you can only use the license while you are student and can't make any money from your projects made with it...It's a great learning tool for non pirate types. -
I doubt anyone'll mind
...considering the Spacetraveller's SIX HUNDRED DOLLAR price

ProE Special Edition
You can call PTC and for $15 they'll send you a ProEngineer Special Edition CD*. Keep in mind that this "special edition" will not create part files that are compatible with regular ProE or CAE software like Ansys or Algor. Think of it as a cheap way to visualize new parts and find packaging problems before you start pulling things out of your car.
You can get a Student Edition which doesn't have the above limitations for about $300 or so, but you need a current valid student ID (or a friend with a student ID :-)
If you happen to know a friendly professor, here's a deal for ProE and ProMechanica (finite element analysis for structural, modal, thermal, and kinematic/dynamic motion) for $150USD.
* Windows only AFAIK
