Easy Start
Try the web. I have a short intro to search engines on my website. Many others exist. The basics aren't hard and are very effective.

Re:Absolutely
Looks like it echos and expands my own little guide I threw out a few months ago. SEO stuff is pretty interesting and doing it right can really help searchers. It's a shame so many people try to rig the system incorrectly while those with real, useful, content usually ignore SEO altogether.

Re:My reasons
Coed Naked Netting: Pushing all the right buttons. http://kavlon.org/
That's the sort of advertising I'll click on. Or in this case copy and paste the URL. Even though I did the same thing months ago and was disappointed by the paucity of coeds and nakedness and the propensity of Linux (not being a Linux person myself). But I liked his content and found the catchphrase intriguing, so for effective advertising I'd recommend associating it with good content.

Re:cry me a river
My websites will always be free. A couple to try.. Techie Stuff and File Sharing. Funny, if all banner-paid sites had to go away then the websites made by people actually doing it out of interest might get more traffic. I'm sure users would hate that.. search for something and actually find a site with real info rather than just ads.

Re:SEOs make me barf
I agree that most SEO companies and scammers just trying to make a quick buck. There are legitimate companies though that teach legitimate techniques. What are legit techniques? Basics that make your website easier for your users to find and use. Do those things and you will rank okay in search engines. I actually wrote up a short howto of the basic seo concepts the other day. I only wish more non-commercial websites would make some effort to optimize their websites. It's especially useful for documentation.

Re:make it tangible
I've thought about commercializing my project of keeping a cd full of free Windows tools. I thought about selling both a cheapy version for around $5 and a nicely boxed version with manuals for around $50.
I was thinking of boxing a similar set of tools for Mac OS. The money collected from the sales could pay for my time mantaining the collection and writing manuals. Anyone know anyone that works for a retail store that'd be interested? :) -
Re:wowIf your phone has web access then it should be no big deal to install a ringtone of your own. Most phones, even the cheapy ones, have supported web access for years now. It's not to hard to install them if you have your own web server or use one of the free services available to 'send' the ringtone to your phone.
I'm working on an opensourced program that will ease producing wallpapers and ringtones and send them directly to your phone or webserver for you. If interested ask on the mobile-oss mailing list. Let me know what model of phone you have and what carrier you use.

OT: Taking my own advice. Free Windows Tools CD.And following my own advice from the previous message.. here is a link to a new page I put up today to an ISO image I created that has FreeDOS, Memtest86, and a lot of useful free Windows programs on it. Burn yourself a copy of my Free Windows Tools CD if you want a handy toolkit CD to carry with you when servicing Windows machines.
If you find this useful then help others find it by linking to the above page. This kind of linking is how SEO should work. Usually though you'd want to post to more on topic chat. This post is just a general example of what I meant in the previous message.

opensource edutainment
I have been experimenting for a while with creating some opensource edutainment titles that should work on at least Linux and Windows (and probably other OSs). I want to create high quality educational titles that are free and cross-platform.
The furthest I've gotten is on my coloring book which should be a nice program for teaching kids basic mousing skills as well as whatever they can learn from the pictures' subject matter.
I've also been working on an Oregon Trail type of program and a couple word/number blaster type games which I hope to release to the public eventually. I'm always looking for other game ideas too. I'd like to make a free version of all major commercial edutainment titles.
I really could use help with artwork. I was going to pay someone to help but I lost my job and haven't had the money to do so since. -
Re:Slashdotted already?

Re:Ok...Check out my website in Opera, Mozilla, and IE. Only Mozilla renders it properly. Both Opera and IE have CSS problems and fail to render it correctly (although it should still be usable). My knowledge of CSS isn't perfect so some bugs might be my own but you can definately see that Mozilla handles the CSS better.
Mozilla has been stable for me until recently. I added more RAM though so it could be a hardware problem. I need to check. Opera has been pretty stable for me also. IE still seems flakey but a lot of that may be because of lame ass add-on's certain programs have added to it.
