The World ChampionshipGreetings from the World Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race: This year, our 37th the course is 42 miles of road, sand, mud, water (nearly 5 miles in the water), thrills, spills, chills and probably some rain as we are located in the beautiful redwood coast of far northern California. The race begins in Arcata and ends in Ferndale... three days and two campouts later!

We have all sorts of history on our page, plus descriptions of our Kinetic Lab where machines are built and the Museum where they go to die.
We crown the most talented, most rutabaga like contestant who offers herself (or this year, himself) to the public for their approval and acclamation as our rutabaga queen. They receive a hand-made crown from Glorious Founder, Hobart Brown.
Do visit us... whether electronically or as Tom Jones and crew did last year IN PERSON!
I so enjoyed visiting Baltimore last year... you can see pix on

For the GLORY!

This one in Baltimore is just a cheap-ass Pretender

Another Kinetic Sculpture RaceI became familiar with the race from Arcata to Ferndale, California when I went to school there.

I'm not certain how long Baltimore's been doing it, but the Arcata race has been going for 37 years.

The King of Kinetic Sculpture RacesThe first Kinetic Sculpture Race began in 1969 in Humboldt County, California, and still rolls today. Its popularity around the world is due in large part to Glorious Founder Hobart Brown traveling the world to promote this type of race.
Duane Flatmo is hands down the king of kinetic sculpture makers. View a number of his creations at his web site. You may have seen Flatmo creations at other KSR races around the United States.

Californian's and others in the west
I have been going to the grand daddy of all Kinetic Sculpture Races for a few years. It is in the fine north-west; Arcata to be exact.
Go check it out (May 29-31) if you want to see some home grown hilarious technology. The sculptors are bizarre and have to do some amazing feats!

original KSR
Others have mentioned Arcata, Eureka, and Ferndale as all being home to the original KSR. It should be noted for those not familiar with California geography that these are all the same race. As mentioned above, it started in Ferndale in 1969 but eventually the starting line moved north, so that now the three-day race starts in Arcata, crosses Eureka Bay, and eventually ends (after climbing the Slippery Slimy Slope) in the Victorian/hillbilly town of Ferndale.
It really is an amazing sight to see (especially the Sculptures trying to get up the Slope in the rain!) and I highly recommend that anyone who can manage to be six hours from the nearest major airport over Memorial Day weekend make an effort to attend.
For a good laugh, the rules are available online. -
Oh for heavens sake ...

Learn about the original 35-year-old race
Baltimore's race is a copy based on the Great Arcata to Ferndale (California) World Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race, celebrating its 35th year in 2003.
What's the difference? The original race is a grueling 3-day trek over road, sand, mud and water. It's as much about endurance as it is art, for the glory of course. -
This has been going on in California since 1969
