America's Digital Goddess, anyone?
Almost 100 comments now and nobody's pointed out that Kim Komando has already claimed the title "America's Digital Goddess"?
I mean it says it right on her website so it must be true.
And no, she doesn't run Linux. She could possibly have a beowulf clustrer, though.

Re:Show for n00bs
There are a lot of hack "tech support genius" guys on the radio. They all suck and stay the stupidest shit.
Excellent post. Might I add that the hacks now include gals too? My dad used to watch Leo all the time. This is where I first learned of Tech TV. Not long ago I was telling him about Leo's podcast, in case he might be interested in downloading a few. He replied that he now listened to some woman on the radio for his tech fix. I came home and looked up who he was listening to and was mortified after hearing about 10 minutes of what Kim Kamando spews on her show. http://www.komando.com/
I'm thinking about buying dad an iPod and loading it with stuff from IT conversations just so I can cure him of his (hopefully) temporary dementia. -
Try these out . . .

Do I need to mention sourceforge and freshmeat?
Not sure if http://skype.com/ is listed in the above lists - it is surely worth mentioning but sometimes requires a USB headset purchase to tweak it, which is well worth the expense since this software often rivals Vonage service in quality when calling pots lines (non-free) and blows away anything when calling pc to pc (free).
http://grouper.com/
http://www.ultravnc.com/ is almost always my preference over tightvnc.
Realplayer is not that bad if it is tweaked - you have to look for the setting that disables automatic ownership of filetypes.
http://kerio.com/ is my firewall preference over ZoneAlarm and Sygate, although the windows xp built-in is is usable. Kerio keeps an eye on changing files via an md5 hash.
http://grisoft.com/, in most cases, would be my recommendation for AV software.
http://www.apple.com/itunes/ is great if you have the connection for it.
And if you want more free software then download emule.
um uh . . erase that last line -
Good idea, but wrong message, wrong medium.
I appreciate the effort, for sure. It's good to see someone actually doing something to increase awareness to the masses.
However -- if alternative, standards-compliant web browsers are ever going to be taken seriously by typical home users who couldn't care less, the community should be doing more than a full page ad containing "Congrats on reaching version 1!" followed by a list of obscure names of geeks who donated.
How many of these individuals can even tell you what version of the AOL InterWeb they are using now?
It would most likely be more beneficial to spend the money on a targeted, well-rounded, cross-media, strategic advertising campaign that communicates WHY the software should be taken seriously and the consequences of not doing so in non-technical terms.
Advertising on a nationally syndicated computer help radio show like Kim Komando's would be a good start.
Hopefully this one ad won't be the last thing the Spread Firefox group will do. I look forward to what comes next. -
Kim Komando!What about Kim Komando?
Oh wait... you said interesting. Sorry.

Re:Not so fast
Microsoft lawyers may be able to either stall it, get it reviewed, or even get it overturned. That's the way the law works. Likewise, there may be other avenues outside of the Courts that Microsoft may take.
Such as guerilla commando raids?
Or gorilla commando raids (Monkey-boy Ballmer leads attack on Sun)?
Or maybe just gorilla Komando raids?

Media Figures Starting to Line Up Against Napster
First Lars. Now Dre.
My Monday paper also contained an attack on Napster, from "Komputer Klinic" Kolumnist Kim Komando. Now, she may not have the star power of Lars, but in certain circles, especially newer users of computers, she does have a following. She has a talk radio show, and runs a nationally syndicated column in papers like the Los Angeles Times . She attacked Napster pretty brutally in her column this week, intending to scare new users away.
Someone needs to get out and hit back against these folks and the RIAA....
