No support needed.
And as i pointed out already, distributing your code under an open license makes it easy for you to reuse other code available under the same or similar terms, so you may find that most of what you want to write already exists and you just need to add to it.
Free has a double meaning. For example I charge a fee for the binary copies of my open source software. That is entirely legal under the GPL. Actually it is even encouraged. My suggestion is to use the word gratis for free of charge.
Surely the software is free, support costs model should be preferable to virtually everyone on slashdot... A site populated by people who are generally clued up enough to not need support services means we don't really need to pay for anything.
But it would not be preferable to me. But I call your bluff, go ahead suggest a viable support cost model for my products:

Was just about to ask that question...
... and you just beat me to it. In fact I am selling open source for smart phones [1] - and it would be great to sell to the Linux market. In fact it is not a shop if you can't charge for the program. Note that - with the GPL - you only really have to give the source to your customers so I could envision a shop where access to forums, source code etc. pp is only available to paying customers.

SourceForge is no good if you want to get paid
On sourceforge no one ever donated a single penny to me. SourceForge only works if you want to give your software away for $0,00.
I have a JavaME sortware for sale [1]. Currently I upload only demo version and source code to sourceforge but I sell on handango, mobile2day or smartsam.
So I welcome the Java shop - it might give me the opportunity to sell the MacOS/Windows/Linux version as well.

PS: before you wonder: JavaME is a pain to set-up so compiling yourself is not worth the effort compared to the few $ the application actually cost.

Lack of Respect for Software Authors.
A bit weird, why would you prevent copying of a gratis application.
Because you don't want it to turn up everywhere on the internet. Example: I released a open beta test of my Symbian OS application [1] and soon after it turned up everywhere on the Warez sites. That would not have been the problem. But the copies turned up without any reference to the beta test program or the application homepage or anything.
The vain Warez supplier would not give any credit to the author at all. Authors don't exist for them. Psychological understandable: If they given credit to the author they would need to admit to them self that they are thieving bastards. This is new generation of software pirates which have nothing in common with the hackers of my youth.
So yes: I would consider to set the "no-copy" flag on even on gratis application.

WoW on Linux
I too play WoW on Linux - Without cedega that is. There is an endless discussion on the internal cedage forums about it - but the bottom line is: Sometimes it's better to use an up-to-date Wine with OpenGL instead.
The only thing which does not work is the Microphone - but it won't work the Linux version of Skype either so the trouble is elsewhere.
See my installation aid: http://martin.krischik.com/index.php/Main/WoWOnLinux
