Wireless Hotspot Creation?
ezodon asks: "I have been tasked by management to submit a plan on creating a wireless hot-spot in several of our locations. Management would like to be able to charge for the wireless access from our customers. Because of the desire to charge, I have not been able to find any Open Source software, and just a few commercial offerings. I have checked out PublicIP and LessNetworks wireless management software, but neither has a direct billing option. We already have a merchant account and credit card machines at all of our locations. Can anyone in Slashdot land give me some recommendations on how to get this done?" -
Seattle Wireless TV Releases June 2004 Show
drewzhrodague writes "Seattle Wireless TV just released their June 2004 Show, containing a segment by (me) Drew from WiFiMaps, called 'Booze and Wi-Fi,' which is an interview with Doug Luce from Telarama (the world's third ISP). Doug talks about their successful ultra-low-cost hotspot setup, and shows us how they are being deployed. Also, Jason Levitt of Less Networks presents 'How Less Networks and Austin City Wireless Project beat T-Mobile,' a presentation on why every day should be a free Wi-Fi day, how a $100 press release with a good message is worth more than a million-dollar ad campaign, and about their AP/captive-portal setup. Check it out for Realplayer, Windows Media, or MPEG torrent." -
Austin Becoming Wi-Fi Hot Spot
Omega1045 writes "The Austin Chronicle is running an interesting article on how Austin is fast becoming the Wi-Fi Capital of the Free (as in beer) Wireless World. With the industry standardization board Wi-Fi Alliance moving to Austin earlier this year, and groups like Austin Free-Net helping local businesses, the article quotes Austin has having more hotspots 'than anywhere else on the planet'. While this article does quite a bit of bragging about Austin, it also does a great job of highlighting how businesses and local non-profits can work together to promote and profit from free Wi-Fi Internet access. This provides an excellent model for other cities to follow using tools like Less Network." -
Open Source Hotspots
darthcamaro writes "Not that long ago it was a serious pain to get an 802.11b card to work on a Linux machine. [ed note: We love you Jean Tourrilhes!] Wi-Fi Planet has a story where they do an overview of a wad of open source Wi-Fi projects. Did you realize that you don't even need to spend the dough for an Access Point? - standard Linux routing is enough to create your own access point, with a few other tools like Public IP's Zone CD or the Less Networks Hotspot server, you can freely create a hotspot and manage it all in minutes. I guess all this means that both Wi-Fi and open source are literally 'everywhere'."
