Build your own system
There are plenty of Linux-compatible hardware to choose from. If you are going to be overclocking, I highly recommend Abit's KT7 and KT7A line of motherboards. They offer jumper- free multiplier and voltage adjustments and the board plays nice with Linux. Get any old soundcard that works and the best AGP card you can afford. A good list of Linux-compatible hardware can be found at the Linux Hardware Database:

NVIDIA and Matrox have good Linux drivers. AMD Athlons and Durons are pretty affordabe. Agilent Articooler, Lian Li case. Go crazy and I'm sure you'll have an awesome gaming rig. Hope this helps. -
Sort of a 1/2-ass answer (better than nothing)
Well, there is linhardware.com which is a pretty good source of information regardling what works (and how well, links to driver info, etc. sort of like HCL++). Linux only, which is too bad. Maybe some enterprising person will generalize this out to (random name) openhw.org for all the major alterna-OSes (linux, *BSD, BeOS). I can see this as being pretty easy to do using Slashcode (OSes = categories) or similar. There would probably have to be some way to sub-cateogry as well (e.g. BSD:WAN Interfaces or BeOS:3d Accelerators), to allow a dual functionality from the site combining the current news format of
/. and the heirarchical format of LhD.

Re:This is easy...
OR, another idea would be a centralized database that allows everyone to put up information they have about hardware / software compatibility, as
well as reviews and comments. (If anyone is actually interested in doing this, let me know at vulgrin@yahoo.com... as I might be interested in
helping.)
Check out the Linux Hardware Database, which seems to fit the bill nicely as far as hardware is concerned. Seems like a well put-together, informative site with a decent amount of material.
Cheers,
