Re:Threatening People For Dummies
There's been a couple of replies, but they've missed the real answer.
Trademarks apply only to a category of products. As long as the products are different types, there is no infrigement... thus, apple computer and apple records. (actually that's a bad example because the products overlap when you get computers playing music). But, compare orbital and orbital. No infringement. Thus, if "windows" is a software product, and "wordperfect for dummies" is a book, there is no overlap, thus no infringement.
But ya' gotta love the irony! -
Re:Disadvantage
How boring would it be to see a DJ sitting down in front of computer, occasionally clicking something unseen on the screen?
Guess you can't have seen Orbital perform live then? The Hartnoll boys have got a pretty damn impressive stage presence, thankyou-very-much. And no, they don't spin records, they "occasionally click stuff onscreen", as well as tweaking the knobs on various bits of sythesiser, mixing, and sampling kit (my favourite's the Novation Supernova, fantastic synth that one).
Stage performance is what you make of it, whether you're playing on a guitar or a sequencer, as long as there's some human input you can make it appealing to the audience.

My personal favesI personally like The Crystal Method (more the older stuff), Orbital, Juno Reactor, and Hallucinogen. They seem to reflect the sounds most new electronic music listeners like. You'll probably recognize many Orbital songs, as they have been featured in many movies, such as Hackers, the Saint, Spawn, and many more. Crystal Method is also commonly heard in popular sources, such as in Automobile ads (unfortunately!).
Just my 2 cents.

Kraftwerk of course...In the Electronic music genre, Kraftwerk is an absolute must. Pioneers in the field. If the early albums are a bit too slow try "Kraftwerk The Mix" which is a bunch of old numbers remixed around '89, by the Kraftwerk guys themselves!
Other recomendations would be Orbital, Etnica, Aphex Twin (aka Richard D. James)
Also listen to various shoutcast streams, and pay attention to who plays. This has worked great for me!

Re:Stuff about genius being recluses
Actually, the mathematics behind this movies is a crap (and a big one). But I still like this movie, the soundtrack is really cool.
I, for one, agree on both points. While the movie was entertaining, the math was ridiculous. The "magic number" was arrived at by nothing more than wishful thinking that devolved into numerology. Worse, the actual number pi has very little to do with spirals, and certainly no more to do with spirals than e and i do, so the entire name of the movie is bogus. Pointing out the prevalence in nature of fractals, the Fibonacci sequence, or the Golden Ratio would have made the movie more plausible from a mathematical standpoint.
But, again, the movie was quite good, and the soundtrack was intriguing enough that I bought it almost right away, and I probably would have even if it hadn't included a track from my favorite group, Orbital. Too bad they didn't pick a different Orbital song; P.E.T.R.O.L. is OK but not really representative of their work.

This isn't a new phenomenon
Electronic music has used this technique for quite some time. One of my favorite bands, Orbital, used this in their song Halcyon... combining Belinda Carligle and Bon Jovi. They mesh better than you would think.

Dr Who Remix
The new Dr Who music is done by a duo called Orbital, yeah, old skool.
I'm sure many of you are already familiar with them... but I'm not sure if electronic, house etc are that big in the US despite the fact the Roland 303 first hit the streets of Detroit and SF. -

Re:Aphex Twin? You prove my pointFine then. Listen to Underworld or Orbital or Leftfield.
And regarding that crack about the "time-honoured rules of music": All such rules came about after experimentation. Are you saying that musical innovation should stop now that we have found a solution?
