Re:As much as could be expectedThis wasn't just an isolated case of abuse of power. Ortiz also tried to use civil forfeiture to grab a motel.
Citing 15 incidents that took place from 1994 to 2008, prosecutors argued that the Motel Caswell facilitated drug trafficking and that motel staff did not take sufficient action to prevent drug crimes from occurring.
However...
While 19 drug arrests were made at the Motel Caswell, 26 each were made at 85 Main St., an address shared by Home Depot, Applebee's and Burger King, and 95 Main St, where the Motel 6 and IHOP are located. Twenty-four drug arrests were made at Walmart.
Going after a legitimate business to try and take their land because you think they can't afford lawyers like Walmart and Home Depot can is as corrupt a thing to do as I can think of.

Why "no moving parts"?
Here's a story of a company that can print a monkey wrench:

I've never been so embarrased to say I'm from MA
How did Romney win this state? The lone newspaper in MA that endorsed Bush in 2004 over Kerry endorsed McCain and Hillary. The editor of the paper went off about how bad Romney was when he was governor. Though the reasoning for voting for Hillary is just stupid (Bill was a bad guy, but Hillary gets credit for sticking by him, therefore she should be the Dem nominee?).

Re:Strange way to prosecute in the USPerhaps someone can explain how homocide cases in the US go?
There are preliminary hearings in the U.S. in which the state must show some of it cards in ordere to establish probable cause for the arrest, argue for the denial of bail, and so on.
Some recent examples pulled from Google:
LHS Math Dept. chairman waives probable-cause hearing in rape case
Judge finds probable cause in city razor blade fightProbable cause found in Centralia man's alleged bomb threat.
Americans have chosen to keep the investigation of crime and the prosecution of crime as open and public a process as possible.
It is worth mentioning in this context that the stiffest resistance to President Bush's proposed rules for military tribunals came from within the American military justice system itself anf from those like Senators McCain and Warner steeped in its traditions and values.

Re:Well that settles it then...
From the Lowell, MA paper: Endorsement: George W. Bush for president

Re:Doesn't matter.
I would gladly list my reasons for voting for him, but I would be rightly modded Offtopic and wrongly modded Flamebait, as has happened in every politics.slashdot posting I've posted so far.
This section is absolutely ridiculous...how can every story be slamming Bush? At least include the link to the Lowell Sun's editorial that backs Bush over Kerry (from the editorial: "We in Massachusetts know John Kerry. He got his first taste of politics 32 years ago in the cities and towns of Greater Lowell.") -
Re:This is news?
A paper with a circulation of 425, no less. Nevermind the Lowell Sun endorsing Bush, though.
--trb -
It's sad...
It's sad that the AP picks up the fact that a paper with a circulation of 425 supports Kerry. But there is not mention that the Lowell Sun, a ciculation of 100,000+ and a major newspaper in Massachusetts, Endorses Bush.
No Bias here. Noooooosiirrreeee.
