Re:In a word...
If you were actually willing to get up, leave the house, and go to an Apple Store; they handed it to you for free just for asking. I got my copy, along with a cool T-Shirt and some other swag, at the grand opening of the Palo Alto location.
Ah, that was a limited time promotional offer
This article describes it somewhat differently
Because I made my original OS X purchase with my dealer, I qualified to be in the queue for one of Apple's free upgrade kits. Can you believe it, after two attempts, I got the last copy? Amazing. I brought home my prize, and got to work.

Re:lies
Yes, parent is right if one uses Grab.app. But there is a screenshot->PDF method (which I just found here [macwrite.com].) It outlines the following (simple?) method for screenshots "Cmd-Shift-4 plus Spacebar plus Click"

Re:*sigh*
wasn't a 66 year old man, it was a 66 year old grandma that couldn't possibly have been guilty because she only owns a mac, and the software the RIAA accused her of using doesn't have a mac version, only a windows version
To but to bed this fallacy once and for all, there IS software available for the mac to enable sharing on the Kazaa network. It is conceivable that she could have this software installed under Mac OSX (wether she did it or a visiting child did it).
THe OpenSource movement on slashdot should know that when there is a lack of software available, something always pops up soon.

Advertising...so what?I don't see why people are so up in arms about the various ways of advertising.
The content on the sites you visit is not free. Someone has to go find the content you are looking at, prepare it to sell, etc.
I have disabled pop-ups, and I have adjusted my hosts file to block most major ad servers I also added a default style sheet to catch a bunch more ads.
Finally, if I go to a site that routinely annoys me with too much advertising that gets around my various quick fixes. Then i stop going there.
Advertising is a necessary annoyance of a supposed free medium. However, I am also free to disable it as I see fit. If it bothers you so much, do something about it. If not, quit bitching.
PS- I did not write the style sheet, and I would love to give credit/thank who ever did, but i can not find the original source in my bookmarks.

how about an iTower?
saw this on macwrite
http://www.macwrite.com/yourturn/windows-guy-buys
- mac.php" The eMac is a dorky unit. It also represents what is a glaring hole in the Apple line. There is a huge market of consumers that are buying low end PCs in that $500-700 range. The only unit Apple has to compete with that is the eMac. Now someone somewhere might think that is a good option, but I haven't met that person.
What Apple needs for this market is a low-end tower. Potential switchers should have the option of buying a mid tower with the eMac specs (800Mhz G4, 128MB RAM, 40GB drive, CD) for $600. If you are trying to get people to switch, it kind of goes without saying that they already have a monitor. A low-end tower would let them get into a Mac at a more attractive price while retaining the equipment they already paid for. "
Would an $600 iTower mean more switchers or cannibalize PowerMac sales?

Re:crap in, crap out
I suppose that until people find that CD ripping has audible problems on their system, then they're not going to see the need for software that cures a problem they don't have.
suffice it to say, people do. it's not "talking bollacks," as you said.

Re:Apple promoting piracy?
The shared file feature only works for INTRANET LAN's using Rendezvous.
Not quite - the discovery of servers on the local net is done with Rendezvous, but you can "share" (i.e., stream) music between any two IP addresses (if you're behind a firewall, you need to open port 3689). -
Re:The NetInfo method
Okay looks like I assumed wrong (you don't all know). You can activate your
/etc/hosts file by setting /locations/lookupd/hosts/LookupOrder -> ( CacheAgent, FFAgent, NIAgent, YPAgent, DNSAgent, NILAgent ) in netinfo.
Simply copy this file to lookupd.txt. Then type:
niload -r /locations/lookupd / < lookupd.txt
Yes, I "stole" all of this from this page. Except mine is modifyed to activate the /etc/hosts file also.
