IRC as a World-Changing Medium
khaladan writes "Wired has an interesting article titled Chat Room That Built the World that talks about the power of developers helping each other on IRC. The article covers the case of #winprog on EFnet, where people such Justin Frankel (creator of Winamp), John Johansen (DVD Jon), and Shawn Fanning (of Napster fame) have come to chat, hang out, and get help. Many from Microsoft visit the channel as well. Ben Knauss calls it 'innovation in its purest form, without ego, money or fame as its goal.'" -
CNN Interviews with Harlan Ellison, Bruce Sterling
half_cocked_jack writes "Over at the CNN Podcast area they have a program titled 'Hollywood's SciFi Summer'. It sounded interesting, so I downloaded it. Much to my surprise, the host, Renay San Miguel, seems to really know SF, and he interviewed Harlan Ellison, Connie Willis, Bruce Sterling, and Len Wein on their views on how Hollywood handles SF. Great listening!" -
Programs for Filling In Web Forms?
cafebabe asks: "My mother has severe arthritis and must do a lot of her shopping online since it is painful for her to walk. Since she also has trouble typing, she needs a program to help her fill out all of the data entry fields on web sites. When I was home over Thanksgiving, I saw that my mother had Gator on her computer. I uninstalled it, explained spyware to her, and installed RoboForm, which I had heard good things about. RoboForm ended up causing her computer to crash so my father uninstalled it. Is RoboForm really the best thing out there or do any of you know of something better?" -
Linux Sound Support w/ the Toast'n Jam PC Card?
strredwolf asks: "I may have a challange for you. I'm looking for specifications on the New Media Toast'n Jam PCMCIA card, also known as a Noteworthy SCSI/Audio combo card. Yeah, I know the Adaptec 152x driver works on this -- but I want to get the audio working on it! Does anyone have one of these cards and have audio working on it via Linux? I'd love to program up a driver for them. I've already looked via Google for both, but aparently, New Media Corporation doesn't exist anymore. And I don't have any documentation on this card with the box (had to pull the drivers through a third party)." Yet another argument for a company at least releasing the specs for their hardware when they go out of business. Has anyone had any luck teasing out soundwaves from their tweeters using this PCMCIA card?
