Re:Climate Change? meh...
This needs to be said. That SAME IPCC is releasing a report in a few days saying despite the "massive increase in CO2" measurable temperature increases are not happening. NYT source
Since we are throwing around anecdotes and pretending that we aren't, I have this for you. Oregon already got its first snow of the year, a record early time.
So fatwilbur attempted to "be reasonable" and explain that anecdotes don't matter and then he made up a stance of the IPCC that isn't true and used an anecdote without a shred of proof to back it up, while I found one that is record breaking in support of the opposite view with evidence. This seems to be a common theme in these AWG debates on
/. One side makes up crap and name calls while pretending to "be reasonable" and the other side shows actual evidence and points out scientific fraud. -
Re:Which method?
Hey, argue against the dictionary all you want.
:) Examples of usage from media outlets, just in the headlines alone, and ignoring other uses of the phrase and puns (such as "Home pool tables cue up lots of family fun"):

Need me to keep going? Just because you haven't heard the phrase doesn't make it any less real, or any less in the dictionary. -
Re:Response
You're abit confused. The things your upset about aren't liberal/conservative things but republican/democrat things. There are more sides to the political compas than left and right. What you're worried about is a result of our slow descent into fascism, which both of the major parties are guilty of.
But since you asked so nicely. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic le/2006/09/28/AR2006092800824_pf.html12 Democrats voted for the torture bill;

Here's a couple things from my state of oregon. 4 months after voters in lane county rejected a tax increase, the county commisioners enacted an even larger income tax against the will of the voters which the voters then had to petition to remove.http://www.registerguard.com/news/2007/05/1 3/ed.col.kutcher.0513.p1.php?section=opinion

Re:Moo
So whats wrong with number 6? It's not a link to the onion or something inane like that, it looks like a real newspaper article about a Republican PR company sending out letters claiming that it's affiliated with America Votes, when America Votes has no knowledge of it, and as a non-partisian organization wouldn't have affiliated with a Republican firm or provided a phonenumber to a voice message asking people if they're interested in hitting the streets to get people to vote Republican.

Re:Where Would Apple Be
I'm not surprised to see someone rating me as a troll for saying Microsoft helped Apple out when Apple was hurting financially. They are ignorant and don't know what the hell they are talking about and doing, but hey, that's nothign new for Slashdot. Lash out supporting your favorite brand without looking up facts, that's what Slashdot is all about. The truth is Apple was hurting and they could use the $150 million as well as the hundreds of millions that Office products brought them.

Re:Since you brought it up...
Hey! I have a degree in economics!
Oh. What was the question again??? = )
Well, happy to pointificate!
Hmmm.. Boycot Exxon? OK, well, they would just advertize like BP. Sunflowers, responsibility, alternative energy. Bla bla. People would believe it too. All the while they pump that oil...
Prices of gas are increasing faster than crude because they are different markets. Now there are limited amounts of refineries in the US and few companies can invest that much capital to build one... I understand they take a few years to build and get onstream..
Not that Bush's idea (subsidize the building of oil refineries) is a great one. The oil companies are making big bucks: they should do it right? I heard that one made more profit last quarter than any other company in history. Could have been Exxon, I don't remember.
To me, the question is: why are there so few refineries now? Did the oil excecs get to gether some golf game and say: Let's not build any more for a couple years? Was it *really* environmental regulation that quashed them? Collusion in that market would have the benefit of huge profits for them. I remember Cheney had secret meetings with the oil 'boyz' a few years ago, and they collectively decided US energy policy, without ever releasing the minutes of those meetings.. I think that was pre-Iraq so they might make some fun reading in 40 years.. It could have been similar to:
Cheney: Thanks for the donation, boyz. Like the cigars? They're Cuban! Batista! Well, to business then. We agree that you don't make any refineries in the next few years (and collect excess profits), support us in Iraq, and we'll get you those Iraqi drilling contracts, leash the anti-trust hounds. Of course we'll expect future consideration...
Oil barons: No refineries? None of us? We're "Gung Ho" for Oil Contracts! (puff.. puff...) OK, deal.
Well it *could* have been like that! = )
In general, you are better to vote in politicians that support consumers, not oil companies, than attempt to get a boycot organized. Companies (Oil or RIAA members) do not have to adapt to change if they are protected by fiat. And one can buy policy so cheaply these days:
$200M building an oil refinery could get you say a %50 return if you bet correctly on oil prices.
$50,000.00 donation/investment to Cheney's PAC could help get you $8,000,000,000 in return.
Where would you invest? The law requires you to act in the best interest of your share holders, not your country.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pressreleases/cheney/ch eney1988.htm
Katrina and Rita wipes out a few refineries and it all goes to hell for the consumer...
Of course nobody will know what the truth is until these folks are long gone.
Cheers,

This will have many applications
"Scientists at UC Santa Cruz have been using computational techniques to 'reverse engineer' the DNA of extinct species."
The scientists added that the Bush Administration's environmental policies will helpfully provide many more extinct species for the new techniques to be tested on. -
Re:List of this groups backers. MAJOR GOP SUPPORTE
A GOP funded organization stole the name from the real America Votes to help perpetuate this fraud. Aside from disenfranchising dozens? hundreds? thousands? of Democrats I think one of the biggest tragedies is that the real, non-partisan America Votes will be hurt by this. I don't blame you for being confused, that was the point.

Text:
(Oct. 12) -- Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.
Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.
The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at Democrats. The focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.
The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.
Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats.
"We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assisatnt to get those from me," said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee.
Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law.
So the people on those forms who think they will be able to vote on Election Day are sadly mistaken. We attempted to speak to Voters Outreach but found that its office has been rented out to someone else.
The landlord says Voters Outreach was evicted for non-payment of rent. Another source said the company has now moved on to Oregon where it is once again registering voters. It's unknown how many registrations may have been tossed out, but another ex-employee told Eyewitness News she had the same suspicions when she worked there.
It's going to take a while to sort all of this out, but the immediate concern for voters is to make sure you really are registered.
Call the Clark County Election Department at 455-VOTE orclick here to see if you are registered.
The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate. -
But surely...
When it comes to the economy, President Bush is demonstrating genuine leadership. The economic growth package he recently proposed takes us in the right direction by accelerating the successful tax cuts of 2001, providing marriage penalty relief, and providing incentives for individuals and small businesses to save and invest.
Contrary to the class warfare rhetoric attacking the President's plan, the proposal helps everyone who pays taxes, and especially the middle class. This year alone, 92 million taxpayers will receive an immediate tax cut averaging $1,083 and 46 million married couples will get back an average of $1,714. That's not pocket change for a family struggling through uncertain economic times. Combined with the president's new initiatives to help the unemployed, this plan gets people back to work and helps every sector of our economy.
