urpmi has some problems
urpmi has been useless for me on both of my Mandrake 8 boxen, after about a week's worth of casual use. (It dies in some sort of a perl dependency, to be specific.) Consequently, rpmdrake is also hosed.
I'm not the only one, either... check out the horror stories on MandrakeForum.
On the bright side, rpmdrake is the first well-designed GUI package manager that I have laid eyes on. When it works, it works well. I hope they iron out the bugs for mdk 8.1.

Mandrake Firewall
Now I can see why the guys working on Mandrake Firewall are not yet using 2.4 for a production firewall! At first I thought that having a stateful firewall would have be worth it, but more testing has to be done before anyone makes it production.

Rushed, once again.Don't get me wrong -- I love Mandrake and the guys that work for MandrakeSoft. However, I must say that just like 7.0, the beta cycle on this was far too short. If you read MandrakeForum, you will notice that there seems to be many unresolved bugs.
However, I do think that this is much, much better than 7.2, just don't be surprised to see 8.1 (or 8.01) come out just as quickly, and tons of things in MandrakeUpdate.

Re:Linux Journal slams Mandrake! It is however pointed out that it crashes some (Helix?)GNOME applets. Which is true, as far as I can tell, but only for "freshly out of box" 7.2 sold commercially
There was some discussion of the review on mandrake's forum. What was noted there is that Helix explicitly says that their packages don't yet work with mandrake 7.2. The reviewer essentially tried to install an incompatible package, and then complained when it didn't work. That's far from what I'd call "intelligent reviewing."
