Re:Google's $10,000 fee isnt helping growth.
The fee is most definitely not required for this specific application. Your client could have used the technology for a branch locator with no problem -- it has been done numerous times before and there are plenty of tutorials on how to do it.
The fee is required for sites that want to do more than 50,000 hits a day (to the map server) or want to put the map somewhere that is not publicly accessible (as the current API requires).

how about www.mapki.com
I find Mapki and Mike William's Tutorials more than sufficient. A quick glance at the API group's mailing list also helps.

mashups
Web mashups are hot. It's hard to look at a list of websites offering an API -- Google Maps, Yahoo Geocoding, eBay, craigslist, Flickr, YouTube -- and not start thinking about great ways to combine them.
Some links of interest:
API list is here.

Also on Google Maps...

Re:Uncertain Future of Google Maps API
Are you kidding? The Google Maps API has been hugely succesful for Google. Check out Google-Maps-API Google Group and notice how many bugs have been reported and fixed, how many hundreds of mashups have been created. They've gone through 23 (or so) revisions to the client-side JavaScript since June when the API started floating around.
What other huge commercial organization has done something similar to this? I would say that it's very unlikely that Google will cut off this source of development help.
Check out http://www.mapki.com/ for more development information. There's tons of helpful documentation there.
