    There's a reason our screens are wider than they are tall, though: we need horizontal space more, because we read from side to side. This means things with text in them generally need to be (much) wider than they are tall.

    Actually, you're just about 100% wrong on that point. Studies on human reading have demonstrated that it is much easier on the reader's eyes if text width is thinner rather than wider:

    On the web, vertical space is used for skimming text and scrolling content, and is hence much more important.

    I'm not sure how you missed the point so spectacularly.

    Not only is there CSS to do the things people used tables, for, but table has always been an abuse of the semantic intent of that HTML document tag, muddying it and confusing parsers. Yes, HTML could use more tags, but tables are hardly necessary.

    And setting aside the semantics, people who actually have to restyle your table layout later (when rewriting the site is not an option) will have every reason to curse you.

    The decoupling of the layout CSS offers is a powerful tool.

    And, no, web pages are not, and have never been intended to be, mapped to application UIs. Is nice that they can, but that's a very limited case, and not even the main use of web pages.

    If this was a question in disguise:
    For the german speaking croud, I think SelfHTML with it's part about CSS is a very usable reference, apart from the above mentioned W3C specifications.

    Other useful material consists of diverse articles on A List Apart and meyerweb; and many bits and pieces can be found on Listamatic, BlueRobot and Zen Garden, just to mention a few of my favourites.
    Oh, and don't forget to search the web for those cheat sheets needed for IE 6 and other old browsers.

    Well, the first question is (as I said), are you using the right box model? If not, width/padding/border will not work according to CSS rules.

    If so, congrats! You've taken step 1 in dealing with IE and now width/padding/border/margin works for most cases. But it's still filled with all sorts of annoying bugs. Here's a really comprehensive list:

    And the W3C validator only checks for syntactical correctness and does not prove your page is rendering correctly or incorrectly.

    Browsers render HTML progressively, before the page has completed downloading. That's not possible if you need to validate the document before hand (and how do you deterimine if it is invalid without validating it?). Furthermore, browsers in wide use like FF are tolerant and well optimized for "Quirks", so there's not necessariliy any speed penalty for doing so.

    I spent about 30 hrs this week working the CSS. Here are some of the couple dozen sites I visit regularly. They're not all tutorials, but all are useful. There are a lot of place where standards and the real world usage clash. A couple of tips from me - Build and test your pages in Mozilla first. Even though MSIE still has a huge lead in mkt share, Slashdotters will be surprised to find out that Explorer is a stagnant sun dried dog turd, full of buggy, half-assed standards implementation. It's much easier to do it right first, then insert workarounds so the CSS displays correctly in Explorer. It's easier to achieve the results you want if you start at zero. Null the defaults so that all the implicit layout collapses. * { margin: 0; padding: 0; borders: 0; } If you find these links useful, please pay me back by checking your work on a Mac too. As a website user, I get really sick of seeing display wackiness - especially lines of type with squashed leading or running beyond the container div because nobody bothered to test in a Mac environment too.
