Damn, you just made me realize how little men have been objectified in Star Trek compared to women. I demand equality! Chris Pine needs to go shirtless the entire next movie to help make up for it.

Women:
  * At least one major character per series whose job included being sexy: Counselor Troi (TNG), Yeoman Rand and Uhura (TOS), Seven of Nine (VOY), T'Pol (ENT), and Dax (DS9)

Actually, The Naked Time reminded me of something. There's a hilarious moment at the end of the episode after McCoy develops a serum to cure everyone. He goes around the bridge injecting people, and when he gets to Kirk, for no apparent reason he grabs Kirk's shoulder and rips his shirt open before injecting him like everyone else. It's so gratuitous--I would absolutely love a brief parody of that scene in the next movie.

Memory Alpha (the Star Trek wiki) says

The first "real-world" tricorder was developed by a Canadian company called the Vital Technologies Corporation in 1996. The scanner was called the TR-107 Mark 1; Vital Technologies sold 10,000 of them before going out of business in 1997. The TR-107 could scan EM radiation, temperature, and barometric pressure.

The TR-107 is properly referred to as a true "tricorder" due to a clause in Gene Roddenberry's contracts with Desilu/Paramount dating back to the time of the Original Series. The clause specified that if any company could find a way to make one of the fictional devices actually work, then they would have the right to use the name.

So, two problems.

One, our text translation software isn't foolproof, but people expect it to be. What happens when the software confuses "galleta" (Spanish for "cookie") with "callate" (Spanish for "shut up"). They do sound similar if you say them out loud, but no one notices because you'd almost never use both in the same conversation. I foresee someone attempting a friendly gesture by offering to share her mother's recipe for "shut up."

Two, live conversations depend upon both parties building on a shared experience. If each one has a different account of the experience, conversations break down very quickly. Ever tried to carry on a conversation with a schizophrenic? And that's just assuming the errors are innocent. What happens when corporations start using this? Your bank requires you to call a number to activate your new card and during the call they have the software "translate" some required disclosure for you, only the translation doesn't really convey what they are supposed to be disclosing. Don't think it won't happen... whoever implements this first on purpose will be running the company one day.

Then again, this whole discussion is purely academic. Gene Roddenberry's estate will just claim prior art and prevent this from ever becoming a reality. Hopefully.

I can literally learn to do nearly anything and read up on any subject I would want to. I practically have Memory Alpha at my fingertips. Little word for you: anything in the TV shows is canon, whether you like it or know. Trekkie stuff sucks because it's bad, not because "a couple of shows suck". All of them suck. Deal with it.

I think you're thinking of DS9, which switched to CGI later in its run. TNG didn't use CGI much, if any.

If you count 2D animation, TNG used a lot of CGI. Their compositing and animation was mostly done with DFX Paint FX and a Quantel Harry.

They didn't use so much 3D stuff, but a couple notable examples were the Crystalline Entity and Tin Man. I'm also pretty sure the flight squad trainers in The First Duty were CG.
