Re:I predict..
Also from that website are a few notes on security that mention with a good antenna on each side, 15 miles can be achieved without an amplifier. 2000 feet with just one antenna and no amplifier.
This is on par with my experience riding around town with a 12dB yagi, pointing it like a laserbeam into hotels and high density housing areas. -
Re:I predict..
Anybody remember that story of the guy getting a 3-mile LOS wirless connection going in San Fran?
3 miles? That's nothing. -

Also on Maui
Wiecking's project to bring wireless net to the island Hawaii has gotten a lot of support from the University of Hawaii and the Maui High Performance Computing Center, which is also working to impelment wireless on Maui. The MHPCC has a site here with some nice info pages, including some helpful coverage maps. A lot of the areas the MHPCC's project covers are way out in the 'boonies (Honokaa, Kohala), so any geeks who are interested in doing the whole hermit-in-paradise thing might want to take note.

NPR QT Stream Beats Real
Based on two samples in our center (1 MacOS Mac/G4, 1 W2K P3), the NPR Quicktime stream is smoother and better sounding than the Real stream on both MacOS and W2K. We've only heard a couple of small pauses in the QT stream, while the Real stream constantly drops out. To be fair, I wouldn't be surprised if NPR's Real server is getting hit a lot harder than the QT. I'd be interested in a technical post mortem from NPR's server admins.

IBM SPs Are Not Super BeowulfsWell, at least not yet. Ok, at first glance an SP is a collection of rack-mount RS6000s, connected via Ethernet. So where's the added value? High speed crossbar switches also connect all of those RS6000s, w/ point to point bandwidth of 30 to 130 MB/sec, depending of the model of the switch adapter.
At our center, we're installing a batch of new SMP nodes, so I'll be interested to see just where we place in the standings when we rerun the benchmark.
