Tootsie Rolls(TM) and Jolt(TM)... because breakfast is the most important meal of the day -
Re:I suppose my real question is
own the product, or the specific letter sequence: b a r b i e
They don't own the letter sequence. You can't own letter sequences. However, if shrimponthebarbie.com was about putting shrimp on barbie dolls, then you would be violating their trademark. Or if thebarbies.com was obviously attempting to appeal to the same people that buy barbie dolls, perhaps by using a cutsie font and background images. However, if they had a picture of a barbaque and maybe some text, then they wouldn't be violating anybody's rights. Just like I can't register Microsfot.com and put up a Linux site without a good reason. -
Re:Bad choice of domain name on your part
set up a "linux" site devoted to Microsoft Windows
Or set up a linux site as a misspelling of microsoft.com? (Microsfot.com) -

Speaking of trademarks and linux...
Has everyone seen www.microsfot.com?

This is not bad.Not a day, not an hour and not one minute goes by without me wanting to develop this game for another platform. Preferably Linux, but I would settle for most anything BUT this dreadful Microsoftism that we game developers need to handle in order to gain any kind of marketshare.
Most of you probably have NO idea just how often Windows 98 becomes unstable, crashes or spontaneously reboots when you are running a games application in development. Glide, OpenGL, Direct3D, Directsound and the Windows system itself are ALL crash- and corruption-prone in this platform.
How would you like trying your modifications in runtime and know that you will probably have to restart the computer if your change was a bad idea?
I'm just glad I still have most of my hair!

This microsoft-typo site re-directs you to www.linux.org

Unforseen circumstance
Something a lot of
/.ers might not have thought about:
Under the cybersquatting law, which also covers "words similar to trademarks, to draw traffic to their own sites" (from the CNN article), this link to to linux.org would be illegal.
Wonder how they'll handle pre-existing domains. Grandfathered? Ordered taken down? Allowed to expire gracefully?
