Re:Nothing new
Wouldn't mind too much, but they also turned off the activation servers, meaning if we have to reinstall Windows due to, say, a virus, we can't reinstall the copy Onfolio we had bought. I guess we hit the "Extinguish" stage of the business plan.
They provided a way to access and export Onfolio data so you can migrate to an alternative solution.

Re:Hmm...
I think what you mean is that you CANNOT run your database under the same OS instance. You can't install any MSSQL version on a "web" edition of Windows Server.
That is exactly what I don't mean.
To quote Microsoft:
Q. Can I use the Web Server as a file server or an application server?
A. No. Windows Web Server 2008 R2 can be used solely to deploy Internet-accessible Web pages, Web sites, Web applications, Web services, and POP3 mail serving.
Q. With Windows Web Server 2008 R2, am I restricted to only running non-enterprise level database application software with the server software?
A. No. With Windows Web Server 2008 R2, you may run any level of enterprise/non-enterprise database application software with the server software.
Q. Can database software running on Windows Web Server 2008 R2 support external applications running on other servers?
A. No, with Windows Web Server 2008 R2, the database software may only support applications that are running on the same local instance of Web Server 2008 R2.
Which, of course, makes Windows Web Server 2008 R2 quite unusable as a platform to run typical databases on, because normally you will want to access the database from other machines too, especially if there is customer data. Since the workgroup editions can't be used for web, you're then looking at the pricey Standard Edition.
Plus the database software, of course. Then multiply by at least three, so you can have a dev / test environment and a combined staging / emergency manual failover environment.
Biz-spark is a great idea -- for Microsoft. It gives the start-ups the means to commit to software they have no idea of the real costs of. That they can do something technically with the cheaper products doesn't mean that the license will permit it once they're no longer doing biz-spark evaluation/development. It can be a rather expensive experience.

Re:Mandatory ACLs
Where do we find mandatory ACLs or MLS policies in Mac OS X? Or are these systems not being deployed in security sensitive environments?
I don't believe that the MAC system in Mac OS X is intended to be user accessible. See page 23 of the Mac OS X Security Configuration document. You probably can access MAC permissions via the CLI, but it isn't supported.
You can also peruse the NSA/CSS Operating System Guidelines for various operating systems. I'll point out that the MS-Windows systems are supposed to be run in Specialized Security -- Limited Functionality mode which severely limits functionality (as the name implies) and MS recommends it only be used on systems where "compromise would cause the loss of life, the loss of very valuable information, or the loss of lots of money."

Re:Hmm...
Im not M$ fan boy but this is not the case, at least not as a start up, some friends of mine are a startup and are using the services offered by http://www.microsoft.com/bizspark/ basically whilst you are strung for cash (m$ says first 3 years) they give you everything you need for free. And then once you start making money and are locked in to using m$ services you start paying, which is fair.

Re:Hmm...
Wrong.
First, Microsoft has several programs that give full licenses for Visual Studio, Expression, Windows Server, etc.. There is no such thing as a special "web server license for IIS". All server versions of windows allow unlimited user IIS. You only need a CAL if the user has an "autenticated" account, which means a domain authenticated account. Most web sites, even corporate ones, don't use authenticated accounts for their public web servers.
SQL Server is licensed in one of two ways, per processor (and no, it's not how many are in the machine, it's how many the server OS uses). See here: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/special-considerations.aspx
"each virtual operating environment running SQL Server 2005 must have a processor license for each processor that the virtual machine accesses."
Even so, most sites don't need a full sql license and can get by quite well on SQL Server Express.
You don't need an MSDN license to develop software either.
-
Re:Hmm...
So, you have a CAL for everyone that is going to connect to IIS? or a special Web license for IIS (I forget what that is called).. Do you have processor licenses for SQL Server? or one CAL for each user that might use the site? (and remember, its one Processor License for processor in the physical machine, not how many you expose to the VM, at about $6K per processor). Do you have the Machine CALs for each machine that is going to connect to Active Directory? Do you have a proper MSDN Development license?
See why most stuff on the internet and cloud run Linux yet?
Your data on the licensing is incorrect. Here is where you can read about it. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-R2.aspx For example, windows web server is $469 USD list and requires NO cal's. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/pricing.aspx

Re:Haha
Uh, he specifically wants to spend more time on developing and not worrying about the hosting part. He also understands the risks in it. In that regard using cloud hosting and storage could be really good, as long as you calculate the price comparatively.
Since he is using Visual Studio 2010 for development, I even suggest using Microsoft's Azure. It integrates beautifully with VS and you can run your code directly in the cloud, while debugging too. -

What is this then? http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx I used it just this week to install sql express...
And i'm not a fan of Microsoft either, but lets not use lies to attack them with.
That would be a place to get some Microsoft software, but I did not see any games, money management software, book inventory software, video inventory software, etc. So, it is not quite the same. If you can think of using a PC to do a task, there is probably software in the repository of a given Linux distro to do it (not necessarily very good software, but nevertheless, something).

Re:Really?
Singlehandedly saved USB from oblivion. (vs. PS/2. A proprietary IBM standard created by the same proprietary mindset that created Microchannel Architecture)
*sigh...* No, it was Microsoft who did since they made it
Sigh.
If you are talking about USB, it was created by a combination of seven companies, of which Microsoft was but one. Intel was the one who actually created the first USB interface ICs, though. And as I have pointed out, USB connectors languished for several years on Windows PC motherboards. It wasn't until the popularity of the original CRT iMac that USB "caught on". That's why so many early USB peripherals mimicked the original iMac's color assortment.
BTW, Windows support for USB didn't even appear until what called Windows 95, OSR2. And it was widely considered to be nearly uselessly buggy until Windows 98. In fact, in Windows 95, USB isn't even enabled by default.
But don't let your lack of historical knowledge stop you from acting the fool.
And, BTW, I said "popularized" the USB interface; not "created" it. As I said above, many, many PC motherboards had USB connectors before the iMac; but it took the iMac's popularity to create that all-important "tipping point" for USB device availability. Which curiously enough, brings us back on-topic regarding Thunderbolt.
Now, if you were referring to MCA, MS had NOTHING to do with that; it was ALL IBM. -
Re:And we care why?
VS2010 doesn't rely on DirectX directly. It relies on WPF, which in turn uses DirectX. There were bits using WPF even in VS2008 release (like the XML Schema editor), they just weren't as prominent.
However, there's a lot of other stuff in Windows that uses DirectX, IE (before v9) being one. Given how many applications embed the IE engine, I think you'd be getting crashes left and right if the only issue was DX. If only just the games crash, then it's probably only when hardware acceleration is used.
Now, in VS, if you go to Tools->Options, and there to Environment->General, there's a checkbox under "Visual Experience" that lets you disable hardware acceleration. Try using that and see if it helps any.
Also, there are a bunch of registry switches that let you do the same to all WPF apps, system-wide (which you'd probably want to do if it helps you with VS).

Every day! Take a look at what comes from the horse's mouth...
That happens about three times a minute, under VS2008. 2010 is better, but then, it's limited to native c++ (which is all fine, except that the PHB decided to do a crapload of work in C++/CLI over the years)...
For really good autocomplete, take a look at Qt Creator and KDevelop 4.x.

Re:Honestly, this is the direction MS needs to go
But didn't their VP in charge of open source quit in disgust a while ago?
I don't know. I guess we should find out for sure before judging. As for Microsoft's open source, there are plenty of projects that they have done. They have also supported external projects too.
I've never programmed in VB (due to MS loathing and distrust), but it always looked like a nice way to build macros for office, and quickly build prototypes.
The Office macros (Visual Basic for Applications) was one of Microsoft's big failures as it was responsible for a massive security hole on Windows. People who were smart enough not to open executables emailed to them would happily open a DOC file from any unknown source which was just as insecure.
It would be great if they open sourced VB6 without their normal strings attached, like it can only be used in projects for Windows platforms after MS has "thoroughly inspected" the project. If they really do use an OSI approved license, I might actually use it on Linux.
Well they do have MS-PL and MS-RL listed as OSI approved licences. I searched the text, but neither of them mention any Windows platform requirement.

Are you reading the article on Zdnet, because that is the opposite of what it says. It says that Microsoft wants you to install antimalware software BEFORE you call them. Re:What it means for Linux users...
I really do wish they'd get around to implementing the Retargetable bit on assembly references though. In my opinion, it's the best way to support end-user replacement of LGPL components -- all dependencies of a signed assembly have to be signed as well, but if a dependency is Retargetable it permits any signature, not just the original one -- they can swap in their own component without a problem and you still don't have to give them your signing key.
It's also the best way to indicate that code is agnostic to the underlying CLR implementation -- make the mscorlib, System, etc. references Retargetable and it will bind to alternate implementations that don't use the same BCL signing keys, such as Compact Framework.

Well,,, apart from the language still having no formal specification and (therefore?) some unfortunate irregularities in the implementation.

Or you can use some centralized Event Log monitoring tool. Or even write your own as I did.
And of course if you absolutely want to use CLI you can write PowerShell script and use WMI to read Event Log, run it through some filters and send it by email. Schedule a task to run your script every now and then. But I think that's really hard and time consuming way to do it.

Re:The cross-platform .NET?
Because it's a statically typed language that can be used like a dynmically typed. You don't write types anywhere and the compiler adds them for you. So you will get type errors on compile time eithout having to write the types explicitely down.
Well, type inference in C# only works on local variable declarations and in lambdas, and the two cannot be combined (i.e. you can't write "var f = x => x + 1"), so it's fairly limited. You still have to explicitly type method parameters, properties and fields.
As well, this still isn't quite the same as dynamic typing. Much more extensive type inference can be seen in OCaml, where you can write a function like "let f x = x#foo", and it will actually infer the type of x as "some object having method foo" - and even that is not a perfect substitute for duck typing.
Now C# actually does have true dynamic typing these days. Still, this is opt-in; for scripts, I think it is reasonable to have it by default.

Re:The relevant bits
you can't do search-and-replaces, pipe the registry through other utilities to make more advanced changes
I may have misunderstood what you mean, but you can do all of that, using Powershell. It's quite easy too. Powershell contains what's called a "registry provider" that allows you to enumerate though the registry items and pipe them through other utilities; see here how to use the registry provider. Look here, here or here for examples of piping registry items through other utilities

No need to edit the registry manually!
Why bother with manually editing the registry in the first place?
Yes, you found the registry setting but unfortunately it seems you don't realize that even Windows has evolved here and there. Editing the registry for these kind of settings hasn't been required ever since Windows XP yet some people still like to do things the hard way (or only copy information from others without thinking things through).
Windows has been using the Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) for quite some time now. One of the key features? Allowing you to quickly setup management "consoles" which give direct access to specific settings which you won't find in the regular settings and menus.
In short: It allows you to either setup scripts of your own or use already existing ones. If you go to the 'administrative tools' and startup, say, 'computer management' to setup local users/groups you're actually starting mmc which is then using "compmgmt.msc".
And guess what? Not all these scripts are available in your comfy administration tools.
So; start menu -> run program (or hit win-r) and type "gpedit.msc".
Now go to computer 'configuration' (I think; I use a localized version) -> admin scripts/templates -> network -> status indicator.
Guess what? No need to manually mess in your registry and risk to screw things up. Better yet; here you can even (ab)use this for your local setups. Say you don't care about the Innernet being available but your router. "if router lives then internet".
Simply use the settings you'll find there and change the URL.
Really folks; I'm no Windows admin by far but ever since I started using Win7 more professionally the first thing I did was check how it worked and how you could control it. If you do that you'll see that messing in the registry manually is hardly required these days.
Just like with Linux you merely need to know what scripts to use

Re:Compare Microsoft to Nintendo and Sony
How does Microsoft letting you use
.NET on a XBox, both of which are made by Microsoft, apply to bl8m8r's assertion that it may be a bad idea to spread the use of .NET on other platforms? I can only infer that the dangers he warns us about are:1. Using a non-Microsoft product to develop
.NET applications may open yourself to litigation from Microsoft or Oracle. Microsoft has a cross licensing agreement with Oracle that resulted from a court settlement with Sun. Novell had a patent deal with Microsoft, I assume Xamian does not.2. You risk vendor lock in with
.NET because of #1.Anyway I don't understand your point because your example doesn't address the above dangers. Personally I think Java vs.
.NET is a better example than bl8m8r's Microsoft vs. Netscape. The cross-platform aspect just lets a developer share the game logic between the Xbox 360/Windows version of a game and the version for other platforms. Otherwise, a port to or from the platform is a complete line-by-line rewrite that introduces errors and requires subsequent changes to be made twice.
Officially
.NET is only cross platform with Microsoft products (eg. Windows and XBox). If my goal was to really be cross platform with other OS, using a language rather than a toolkit such as QT, I would pick Java or .NET since it is officially supported on Windows, Linux, and OSX by Oracle, and other OS through OpenJDK. -

It has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality', which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to paedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
- Linus Torvalds is an anagram of slit anus or VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
- Richard M. Stallman, spokespervert for the Gaysex's Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of mans cram thrill ad.

Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for secondary rim and cord in my arse. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail, which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for 'Felch Male' -- a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, 'felching' is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into 'e-male.'
As far as Richard 'Master' Stallman goes, that filthy fudge-packer was actually quoted on leftist commie propaganda site Salon.com as saying the following: 'I've been resistant to the pressure to conform in any circumstance,' he says. 'It's about being able to question conventional wisdom,' he asserts. 'I believe in love, but not monogamy,' he says plainly.
And this isn't a made up troll bullshit either! He actually stated this tripe, which makes it obvious that he is trying to politely say that he's a flaming homo slut!
Speaking about 'flaming,' who better to point out as a filthy chutney ferret than Slashdot's very own self-confessed pederast Jon Katz. Although an obvious deviant anagram cannot be found from his name, he has already confessed, nay boasted of the homosexual perversion of corrupting the innocence of young children. To quote from the article linked:
'I've got a rare kidney disease,' I told her. 'I have to go to the bathroom a lot. You can come with me if you want, but it takes a while. Is that okay with you? Do you want a note from my doctor?'
Is this why you were touching your penis in the cinema, Jon? And letting the other boys touch it too?
We should also point out that Jon Katz refers to himself as 'Slashdot's resident Gasbag.' Is there any more doubt? For those fortunate few who aren't aware of the list of homosexual terminology found inside the Linux 'Sauce Code,' a 'Gasbag' is a pervert who gains sexual gratification from having a thin straw inserted into his urethra (or to use the common parlance, 'piss-pipe'), then his homosexual lover blows firmly down the straw to inflate his scrotum. This is, of course, when he's not busy violating the dignity and co

There are good studies on this
Knowledge workers are more productive with each additional monitor up to four monitors. After that additional gains in productivity trail off.

Second monitors lead to increased productivity
So, apparently, says the research to come out of Microsoft's User Interface group. Quoting:
The research study required users to complete several different tasks, switch from one task to another, and remember data. None of the study participants had used multiple monitors before.
The first study revealed that the users' productivity increased by 9 percent. Further studies showed even greater increases - at times up to 50 percent for tasks such as cutting and pasting. Mary Czerwinski, the VIBE research manager, is excited about her group's discoveries, asking, "If you're able to squeeze 10 percent more productivity out, do you know how much money that will save?"
One of the user studies that the VIBE group did required users to navigate through a series of doors, and then back their way out. They wanted to test the user's ability to remember a series of actions on a small display versus a large display.
"The interesting thing is that they try to get it right. We found that memory capability is considerably improved on a big display over a small display. There's something about engaging the peripheral vision that improves your spatial memory of what has gone on," said Starkweather. They've also found that additional monitors greatly help women in computing. See same article.
My own experience with this is that I perform better when I can get more pixels in my field of view, regardless of screen size, as long as I can read what's going on. An additional monitor improves both constraints. In contrast, when I have to work with a laptop and an 800x600 display, it's like sipping information through a straw. This is regardless of other factors like network bandwidth. Your mileage may vary.

Re:Why Windows 7?
Microsoft is aggressively marketing Windows on the mobile ARM architecture after sitting it out on the sidelines for years (Windows CE was available but a weak option for most purposes). It was not until recently that Microsoft agreed to even compile a version of Windows other than CE to the ARM RISC chip set. They see that they cannot simply hide behind their Intel partnership if they want to be relevant in the future. The future is looking more like ARM will be dominate in the personal space and Microsoft wants to be a player. To do so they are going to make offer some very sweet deals for certain manufactures such as Nokia.

I found some
It has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality', which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to paedophilia.
- Alan Cox is barely an anagram of anal cox which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum.
