Make a LOGICAL decision ...
... find the ERP system that does everything you need (well, as close to everything that any ERP system can do, all businesses are somewhat different such that the ERP system needs some tweaking). Don't make software decisions of that nature based on what systems it runs on.
Once you find the system that's right, then determine what platforms it runs on.
If it's windows, take prudent precautions ... make sure you have plenty of redundancy and virus protection.
Personally, I'm a big proponent of iSeries. Nothing can beat the system for stability and security.
Keep in mind, of course, that the iSeries isn't a legacy system that can only run RPG, COBOL, and the like. Current versions of the iSeries can run modern Java apps, Linux apps, AIX apps, PHP in Apache2, etc.
Of course, the even with the native applications (RPG & COBOL), you have solid investment protection ... as you almost never need to change an application due to a hardware or operating system upgrade.
Check out http://www.midrange.com/ for more information and iSeries oriented mailing lists. -

tn5250 is what you need.
tn5250 is what you need. It's been a couple years since I've used it, and back then it was functional, but a little quirky. I assume it is no worse now, and probably much better. At that time, at least, there were a several developers who were very active on the mailing list, often providing bug fixes the same day.
It provides only 5250 terminal emulation, but not all the other stuff (file xfer, etc) that Client Access does.
They have a mailing list archive here. I suggest you browse through it to get an idea of how suitable it is for your needs. Of course, since its open source, you can always just download it and try it out. :)
(I've seen some suggestions to use 3270 emulators. While an AS/400 will grudgingly talk to a 3270, you loose a lot of the functionality that you are accustomed to from a 5250. Not a solution I reccommend) -
Re:OS/2>although they did hire some Unix-hating DEC engineeers to design NT
How about the LEAD VMS engineer, Dave Cutler. And Dave is on record as stating: "NT is the chance to do VMS right" VMS was his baby. And it SYS$LIVES on in parts of the NT design.
Dave now says: "I'm vested." (shorthand for I don't care what happens. I have money.)
Somehow, hiring the lead VMS engineer sounds alot more important than "some Unix-hating DEC engineers", now doesn't it?
Links about it:
Link 1 The name as an initals thing.
Link 2Dave saying the guts of NT is VMS-like. A whole thread here.
Link 3How about a os/2 link?
